Failing to find anybody to accept the money to reopen the park, Key West residents, under the auspices of the satirical micronation Conch Republic, sent a flotilla of civilian boats and fire department boats to Fort Jefferson in order to reopen the national park.

He is best known, however, as the Prime Minister of the Conch Republic, the micronation that seceded from the United States on April 23, 1982, in protest over a United States Border Patrol blockade which severely damaged the tourism economy of the Florida Keys.

The tradition stems from the longstanding practice of locals to refer to themselves as Conchs, and ironically to the island as though it were a separate country called the Conch Republic.

The CDP also includes the neighboring island of Conch Key.

Duck Key is located oceanside of U. S. 1 ( or the Overseas Highway ), at approximately mile marker 61, between Conch Key and Grassy Key at.

Some residents use the term " Conch " to refer to a person born in Key West, while the term " Freshwater Conch " refers to a resident not born in Key West but who has lived in Key West for seven years or more.

The resort's outer lodge buildings — Sago Cay, Sugarloaf Key, Conch Key, Boca Chica and Big Pine Key — are named for islands in the Florida Keys.

The Conch King and Conch Queen are symbolic titles bestowed upon two residents of Key West, Florida selected annually during the course of Fantasy Fest.

The title is also a play on the name of the Queen Conch, once very common in the waters around Key West.

Six species live in the greater Caribbean region, including the Queen Conch, and the West Indian Fighting Conch, Strombus pugilis.

White Bahamian Americans in Florida were often referred to as " Conchs ," and their communities in Key West and Riviera Beach sometimes referred to as " Conch Towns.

There are numerous species that live in or around the reef system that are endangered or under some degree of protection, including the following: sea turtles ( Green turtle, Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Leatherback turtle, and the Hawksbill turtle ), the Queen Conch, the West Indian Manatee, the Splendid toadfish, the American crocodile, the Morelet's Crocodile, the Nassau grouper, Elkhorn coral, and black coral.

The NOAA Aquarius Reef Base is an underwater habitat located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, adjacent to Conch Reef.
