* Vietnam War ( Australian forces ): On 23 November 1969, Lieutenant Robert Thomas Convery of the 9th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment was killed when a grenade exploded while he was sleeping in his tent at Nui Dat, South Vietnam.

On Christmas Day 1970, Sergeants Allan Brian Moss and John Wallace Galvin were shot dead and Sergeant Frederick Edwin Bowtell injured when Private Paul Ramon Ferriday opened fire into the Sergeant's Mess of the Royal Australian Army Service Corps at Nui Dat, South Vietnam with his rifle after an all-day drinking session.

The Sán Dìu ( also known as San Deo, Trai, Trai Dat and Man Quan Coc ; ; Chữ Nôm: ; Quốc Ngữ: Người Sán Dìu ) is an ethnic group in northern Vietnam.

The 84 mm-gunned Australian Centurions of ' C ' Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment landed in the Republic of Vietnam ( South Vietnam ) on 24 February 1968, and were headquartered at Nui Dat in III Corps ( MR3 ).

At 02: 43 on the night of 16 / 17 August Nui Dat was heavily bombarded by Viet Cong mortars, artillery and recoilless rifles ( RCLs ) fired from a position to the east.

Yet with D Company in danger of being overrun, B Company, which was still on its way back to Nui Dat, was ordered to return on foot.

Meanwhile, Wilton's decision to occupy Nui Dat rather than co-locate 1 ATF with its logistic support at Vung Tau had resulted in additional manpower demands to secure the base, even if it arguably best met the task force's operational requirements and allowed it to have a greater impact on the Viet Cong.

Indeed the resettlement resulted in widespread resentment and it was debatable how much useful intelligence they would provide on Viet Cong locations and movements, potentially creating an opportunity for them to attack Nui Dat without warning.

Further warnings of a four-battalion attack on Nui Dat subsequently forced the Australians to hasten the call-forward of 6 RAR, which arrived from Vung Tau on 14 June.

Small-scale probes on the perimeter at Nui Dat and mortar fire had been anticipated, and both had since occurred, with such activity a possible prelude to an attack.

The following day A Company, 6 RAR departed on a three-day patrol on a route which included the Nui Dat 2 feature and the ridge to the north-west.

D Company, 6 RAR under the command of Major Harry Smith had previously been warned out for a three-day patrol south-east of Nui Dat and was instead ordered to relieve B Company the next day to continue the search for the Viet Cong mortar crews.

At Nui Dat D Company, 6 RAR began preparations for its patrol, test firing weapons and packing equipment.

Meanwhile, the Australian rock and roll acts Little Pattie, Col Joye and the Joy Boys had flown in to Nui Dat and were setting up for the afternoon's concert.

Yet as he was unable to see their location, for safety reasons the initial rounds were directed a distance from 11 Platoon's known location, before " walking " the fire in to between from their position, aided by D Company's favourable location between the Viet Cong and gun position at Nui Dat, which allowed the rounds to pass over their heads and fall away from them.

However, concerned for the safety of the entire Australian force, Jackson was initially reluctant to authorise the dispatch of the relief force should it weaken the position at Nui Dat.
