In 1831 the Ottomans overthrew Daud Pasha, the last Mamluk ruler, and imposed direct control over Iraq.

During the rule of Ibrahim Pasha ( 1830 – 1840 ), the Egyptian general, over much of Ottoman Syria, Nazareth was open to European missionaries and traders.

Born to a lower middle-class Muslim family in the Gamaleyya quarter of Cairo, Mahfouz was named after Professor Naguib Pasha Mahfouz ( 1882 – 1974 ), the renowned Coptic physician who delivered him.

This period of renewed assertiveness came to a calamitous end when Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha in May 1683 led a huge army to attempt a second Ottoman siege of Vienna in the Great Turkish War of 1683 – 1687.

Mahmud was also responsible for the subjugation of the Iraqi Mamluks by Ali Ridha Pasha in 1831.

The Bushati dynasty rule ended when an Ottoman army under Mehmed Reshid Pasha besieged the Rozafa Castle and forced Mustafa Reshiti to surrender ( 1831 ).

Romolo Gessi ( 30 April 1831 – 1 May 1881 ), also called Gessi Pasha, was an Italian soldier and an explorer of north-east Africa, especially Sudan and the Nile River.

Later the area was further beautified by ` Abdu ' llah Pasha, and in 1831 when Ibrahim Pasha besieged Acre he used the property as his headquarters.

During the uprising Husein Gradaščević was chosen as the leader and Vizier of Bosnia Eyalet in the year 1831 during the summer of that year he led nearly 25, 000 men and marched towards Kosovo where his forces battled against Ottoman regulars under the command of Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha had set up encampments near Štimlje in their efforts to subdue the Muslim uprisings in both Kosovo and Bosnia.

Louis Maurice Adolphe Linant de Bellefonds better known as Linant Pasha ( Lorient, France, November 23, 1799 — Cairo, July 9, 1883 ) was an explorer of Egypt and, as the chief engineer of Egypt's public works, 1831 – 1869, the chief engineer of the Suez Canal.
