Mill's and Utilitarianism
Mill's book Utilitarianism first appeared as a series of three articles published in Fraser's Magazine in 1861 and was reprinted as a single book in 1863.
For a more complete outline of the niceties of Mill's classification system see the page on utilitarianism or read Mill's works Utilitarianism, Defense of Utilitarianism, and On Liberty.
Finally published in 1859, On Liberty was one of Mill's two most influential books ( the other being Utilitarianism ).
While David Brink concedes that Mill's apparently categorical appeal to rights seems to contradict Utilitarianism, he points out that Mill does not believe rights are truly categorical because Mill — when necessary — opposing unrestrained liberty ( e. g. offensive public exposure ).
Furthermore, David Brink tries to reconcile Mill's system of rights with Utilitarianism in three ways:
