She made her concerto début on 21 March 1962 at the Royal Festival Hall playing the Elgar Cello Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Rudolf Schwarz.

In May 2009, Lloyd Webber was elected President of the Elgar Society in succession to Sir Adrian Boult, Lord Menuhin ( who conducted his Brit Award winning recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto ) and Richard Hickox.
Other commemorative works written around this time include the Concerto for Strings ( written in 1938 ), the slow movement of which is in joint memory of Michael and Edward Elgar ; the hymn tune Michael ( to the words " All My Hope on God is Founded " by Robert Bridges ); and the unfinished Cello Concerto, on which Howells had been working at the time of the boy's death and which he found himself unable to complete.

: Appropriately, Elgar included in the variation a quotation from Felix Mendelssohn's concert overture Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage.
He also became very distinguished in works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, including A Sea Symphony, Dona Nobis Pacem, Sancta Civitas and Five Tudor Portraits ; in those of Edward Elgar, especially The Dream of Gerontius, The Kingdom, and The Apostles ; in Bach's St Matthew Passion and St John Passion ; and in Mendelssohn's Elijah.
His poem " Sea Slumber Song " was set to music by Sir Edward Elgar as the first song of his song-cycle Sea Pictures.
Until August 1900, Elgar's songs had been published by Novello: but Elgar had a disagreement with them, and from then his songs, including " The Pipes of Pan " and Sea Pictures were published by Boosey & Hawkes, who bought the copyright for £ 50, with a small royalty per copy of the songs published separately.
