Epacris impressa, also known as Common Heath, is a shrub that is native to the south-east of Australia.

The type specimen of Common Heath was collected in 1793 by French botanist Jacques Labillardière in Van Diemens Land ( now Tasmania ) during a voyage with Bruni D ' Entrecasteaux It was described by Labillardiere in 1805 who gave the species its current name Epacris impressa.

Epacris impressa is commonly found in coastal regions and nearby foothills in a region extending from the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia across southern Victoria and northwards to southern New South Wales as far as the Clyde River.

Taxonomically, the name is currently regarded as a synonym of Epacris impressa rather than being classified as a distinct variety, however a number of named forms are commonly cultivated:

Common-pink Heath Epacris impressa is the floral state emblem.

Following the adoption of the pink heath ( Epacris impressa Labill ) as Victoria's floral emblem, Queen Elizabeth II signed a Royal Warrant on 28 March 1974 adding a Compartment from which the heath could grow.

The flowers are pale purple, and star-shaped with six petals, 1 – 2 cm wide, and produced in a dense inflorescence of 10-30 together ; before opening, the inflorescence is surrounded by a papery bract.

The flowers are erect or spreading ( not pendulous like those of the closely allied Brugmansia ), trumpet-shaped, 5 – 20 cm long and 4 – 12 cm broad at the mouth ; colors vary from white to yellow, pink, and pale purple.

The dark grey-black beak is 3 – 4 cm long, the irises pale silvery-or bluish-grey or hazel, and the feet pink above with black soles and webbing.

The flowers are pure pale blue, 15 – 25 mm diameter, with five petals ; they can also be bright red.

The leaves are evergreen and needle-like, 8 – 60 mm long, arranged in an open spiral phyllotaxis on long shoots, and in dense spiral clusters of 15 – 45 together on short shoots ; they vary from bright grass-green to dark green to strongly glaucous pale blue-green, depending on the thickness of the white wax layer which protects the leaves from desiccation.

Perhaps the most famous story of ball lightning unfolded when 18th-century physicist Georg Wilhelm Richmann installed a lightning rod in his home and was struck in the head – and killed – by a " pale blue ball of fire.

The chestnut fruit has a pointed end with a small tuft at its tip ( called " flame " in Italian ), and at the other end, a hilum – a pale brown attachment scar.

Each flower is about 2 – 3 cm in diameter with five white or pale pink petals.

The male flowers are without calyx or corolla, and comprise a group of 4 – 60 stamens inserted on a disk ; filaments short, pale yellow ; anthers oblong, purple or red, introrse, two-celled ; cells opening longitudinally.

The seed cones are red at pollination, then pale brown, globose and 4 – 8 mm diameter in their first year, expanding to full size in their second year, pointed ovoid-conic, green, then grey-green to yellow-brown at maturity, 3-7. 5 cm in length.

The seeds are blackish, 3 – 5 mm long with a pale brown 12 – 20 mm wing ; they are released when the cones open in spring 22 – 24 months after pollination.

Cyan is zero magnitude, green – yellow – red and blue – pink – red are increasing strengths in opposing directions.

Within a day, the mixture had turned pink in colour, and at the end of two weeks of continuous operation, Miller and Urey observed that as much as 10 – 15 % of the carbon within the system was now in the form of organic compounds.

South Sea pearls are the color of their host Pinctada maxima oyster – and can be white, silver, pink, gold, cream, and any combination of these basic colors, including overtones of the various colors of the rainbow displayed in the pearl nacre of the oyster shell itself.

The Rose Period ( 1904 – 1906 ) is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colors, and featuring many circus people, acrobats and harlequins known in France as saltimbanques.

The flowers are white, rarely tinted yellow or pink, 2 – 4 cm diameter, and have five petals.

Spearmint produces flowers in slender spikes, each flower pink or white, 2. 5 – 3 mm long and broad.

Magenta, a purple color with a pink hue, is a color evoked by light having less power in green wavelengths than in blue / violet and red wavelengths ( complements of magenta have wavelength 500 – 530 nm ).

The flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves ; they are solitary or paired, 2. 5 – 3 cm diameter, pink, with five petals.
