Towards the end of his life, Holst wrote Choral Fantasia ( 1930 ), and he was commissioned by the BBC to write a piece for military band ; the resulting Hammersmith was a tribute to the place where he had spent most of his life, a musical expression of the London borough ( of Hammersmith ), which begins with an attempt to recreate the haunting sound of the River Thames sleepily flowing its way.

Fantasia broke the long-run record at the venue in its twenty-eighth week ; a record previously held by Gone with the Wind.

Although Gershwin himself spoke of the rhapsody as " a musical kaleidoscope of America ", Rhapsody in Blue has often been interpreted as a musical portrait of New York City ; it is used to this effect in the films Manhattan and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, as well as extensively in this context in a segment from the film Fantasia 2000, in which the piece is used as the lyrical framing for a stylized animation set drawn in the style of famed illustrator Al Hirschfeld, to critical acclaim.

Kelly's animation can be seen in Pinocchio when Gepetto is first seen inside Monstro the whale, fishing ; in Fantasia when Bacchus is seen drunkenly riding a donkey during the Beethoven /" Pastoral Symphony " sequence ; and in " Dumbo " of the ringmaster and during bits of the crows ' sequence ; and his drawings are especially recognizable in " The Reluctant Dragon " of the little boy, and in the Mickey Mouse short " The Little Whirlwind " when Mickey is running from the larger tornado.

( 36 variations on the Sergio Ortega song El pueblo unido jamás será vencido ), a set of virtuosic piano variations written as a companion piece to Beethoven's Diabelli Variations ; Coming Together, which is a setting of letters from Sam Melville, an inmate at Attica State Prison, at the time of the famous riots there ( 1971 ); North American Ballads ; Night Crossing with Fisherman ; Fougues ; Fantasia and Sonata ; The Price of Oil, and Le Silence des Espaces Infinis, both of which use graphical notation ; Les Moutons de Panurge ; and the Antigone-Legend, which features a principled opposition to the policies of the State, and which was premiered on the night that the United States bombed Libya in April 1986 ( ibid ).

The majority of the story takes place in the parallel world of Fantastica ( Phantásien in the original German version ; referred to as Fantasia in the films ), a world being destroyed by the Nothing, which represents and constitutes people's lack of imagination in the real world.

Though most of his work has been in film and television, it also includes stage performances ; most notably as Louis Ironson in Declan Donnellan's 1992 and 1993 Royal National Theatre London premières of Parts One ( Millennium Approaches ) and Two ( Perestroika ) of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, and as Ben, one of two hitmen, playing opposite Lee Evans as Gus, in Harry Burton's 2007 critically acclaimed 50th-anniversary revival of Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter's 1957 two-hander The Dumb Waiter at Trafalgar Studios.

Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt, co-produced Fantasia 2000 which entered production in 1990 and features seven new segments performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with conductor James Levine.

Music performed by the Orchestra has been heard in movies, including Casino conducted by Sir Georg Solti and Fantasia 2000 conducted by James Levine.

In September 1991, conductor James Levine attended a meeting with Roy Disney, Thomas Schumacher and Peter Gelb, and was asked to conduct several pieces for a continuation of Fantasia initially named Fantasia Continued.

When this piece concludes with Mickey Mouse's conversation with conductor Leopold Stokowski from the original Fantasia ( with Mickey's lines from the original redubbed by his then voice actor, Wayne Allwine ), Mickey then moves on to chat with Levine before the latter introduces Pomp and Circumstance – Marches 1, 2, 3 and 4.

In Disney's film Fantasia 2000, an adaptation of the tale is set to the first movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major by Dmitri Shostakovich.
