In July 2008, Steuben was sold by Corning Incorporated for an undisclosed price to the Schottenstein Stores Corp., which also owns 51 % of Retail Ventures, a holding company for DSW, Filene's Basement, and formerly Value City Department Stores ; Value City Furniture, which changed its name to American Signature Furniture ; 15 % of American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB Capital Group, some 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes, furniture and crystal.

A basement " Commons " area featured covered parking and additional junior anchors, including The Rx Place and Filene's Basement.

Originally known as William Filene's Sons Co. the store expanded, opening the " Automatic Bargain Basement " in 1909.

Filene's Basement would go on to become a major department store independent of Filene's.

The flagship store of Filene's Basement was located underground, in the basement of the former Filene's department store.

* Filene's Basement

In 1908 Edward Filene opened the automatic bargain annex or Filene's Basement as a way to sell excess merchandise from the upstairs department store.

It was then that Filene's and Filene's Basement were disassociated.

Under the direction of company president Edward Filene, Filene's opened its famous " Automatic Bargain Basement " in 1909, which became a heavily visited tourist attraction.

Filene's Basement was separately owned and operated by Retail Ventures, Inc. until 2009 when it was sold to Buxbaum Group, a liquidaton company.

The Filene's Basement stores were not affected by the Filene's-Macy's merger, since the " Basement " had long been under totally separate ownership from Filene's.

However, in 2007, the flagship Filene's Basement location was closed while the old Filene's building was being gutted and rebuilt.

At the time of the closing, the store was expected to move back into its basement space in 2010 ; however, the Filene's Basement company entered its third Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2011, liquidating and permanently closing all of its stores in December 2011.

The concept of the bargain basement was not new ( Marshall Field's opened the first in 1879 ), but Filene's basement was well lit and ostentatiously decorated.

The far south end of the mall which housed J. C. Penney and Filene's was demolished in 2006 and was replaced by a pedestrian-oriented exterior complex of retail stores and restaurants that directly connects to the mall.

An older Filene's was relocated to a newly built store in a newer wing of the mall in early 1997.

In 2006, as a result of the Federated / May merger, all Filene's locations, including the one at the mall, were closed, followed by most of them, including the Mall of New Hampshire location changing over to Macy's.

Filene's was in the mall until the 2006 Macy's consolidation.

Though the Hess's space was filled the next year by Filene's, the Kmart space stayed vacant, and the north end of the mall suffered in response.

* Macy's ( opened in 2006 in former Filene's ; 200, 000 ft² )

Filene's was a Boston-based department store owned by Federated Department Stores ( 1929-1988 ; 2005-2006 ), and May Department Stores ( 1988-2005 ).

Thirty years later William Filene opened his own department store across the street, called Filene's.

In 1996, the former Jordan Marsh store became Macy's, and in early 2006 the Filene's landmark flagship store was closed.

It opened in 1986, anchored by Sears and G. Fox ( which became Filene's in 1993 and since closed ).

* Bloomingdale's ( 270, 000 ft² ) Opened in 1998-3 Floors with small entrance lobby between Basement and Main Levels.

Basement apartments were numerous and inexpensive, and groups of people or families often lived together in the small rooms.

The 2-track recordings made by them, as a sort of audio sketch book, in the basement itself, came to be known as The Basement Tapes.

* The Basement Tour ( Blue ) — Takes place on a moving tug in the basement service corridors, and involves listening to various facts about the hospital buildings and equipment.

Basement floor drains need to be filled regularly to prevent the trap from drying out and sewer gas from escaping into the basement.

Basement restrooms were renovated, the basement and first floor preparations for additional Breeze Plaza retail space began, the large ticket office in the first floor lobby was removed, and additional retail space was allocated.

* South Court Basement: In addition to the Bagel Bar, the South Court basement contains a pool table, a football table, table tennis, a free NBA Jam video arcade machine, and a large television screen with a Blu-ray player.

Later, a Stop & Shop and Jordan Marsh's Basement Store were added to anchor the opposite northern side of the mall.

In the mid 1960s, the Jordan Marsh Basement Store was built at the north end of the mall.

The mall is directly connected to City Hall Station by escalators from the building entrance and to Esplanade Station from Basement 2.
