Flight and Soyuz
On 6 July 1976 Volynov and Flight Engineer Vitaliy Zholobov were launched on board Soyuz 21 to spend 18 days aboard the space station Salyut 5.
Its first crew was launched 14 days later on 6 July, with Commander Volynov and Flight Engineer Zholobov aboard Soyuz 21.
The crew of Soyuz 14 consisted of Commander Pavel Popovich and Flight Engineer Yury Artyukhin.
In 2004, Thirsk trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre near Moscow and became certified as a Flight Engineer for the Soyuz spacecraft.
