On 6 July 1976 Volynov and Flight Engineer Vitaliy Zholobov were launched on board Soyuz 21 to spend 18 days aboard the space station Salyut 5.

Its first crew was launched 14 days later on 6 July, with Commander Volynov and Flight Engineer Zholobov aboard Soyuz 21.

The crew of Soyuz 14 consisted of Commander Pavel Popovich and Flight Engineer Yury Artyukhin.

In 2004, Thirsk trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre near Moscow and became certified as a Flight Engineer for the Soyuz spacecraft.

Along with Commander Vladimir Lyakhov and Flight Engineer Valery Polyakov, Momand was part of the Soyuz TM-6 three-man crew, which launched at 04: 23 GMT August 29, 1988.

Williams also served as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 21 and assumed command of Expedition 22 in November 2009 having arrived on the International Space Station with his crew mates via Soyuz TMA-16 which launched on September 30, 2009.

Williams with Expedition 22 Flight Engineer Maksim Surayev landed their Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft on the steppes of Kazakhstan on March 18, 2010, wrapping up a 167-day stay aboard the Space Station.

That crew, made up of Expedition Commander Bill Shepherd, Soyuz Commander Yuri Gidzenko and Flight Engineer Sergei Krikalev, launched on 31 October 2000 in a Soyuz capsule from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a four-month " shakedown " mission aboard the ISS.

Mastracchio is currently assigned as the Flight Engineer on the Soyuz TMA-11M / Expedition 38 / Expedition 39 long duration spaceflight scheduled for 2013-2014.

Phillips and Krikalev, along with Space Flight Participant Gregory Olsen, returned to Earth aboard Soyuz TMA-6 on October 11, 2005.

His second was a long-duration stay aboard the International Space Station ( ISS ) as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 15 ; for this mission he was launched in the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft.

He flew as Flight Engineer on Soyuz TM-33 in 2001.

For his first spaceflight, he flew as Flight Engineer on Soyuz T-9, which lasted from June to November 1983.

* The first EVA to perform an in-flight repair of the Space Shuttle was by American Steve Robinson on August 3, 2005, during " Return to Flight " mission STS-114.

Discovery had been twice chosen as the " Return To Flight " Orbiter, first in 1988 after the 1986 Challenger disaster, and then for the twin " Return To Flight " missions in July 2005 and July 2006 after the 2003 Columbia disaster.

While the " Return to Flight " mission STS-114 in 2005 was successful, a similar piece of foam from a different portion of the tank was shed.

The second " Return to Flight " mission, STS-121 launched on July 4, 2006, at 2: 37 pm ( EDT ).

Prior to Return to Flight, NASA Administrator Sean O ' Keefe declared that all future flights of the shuttle would go to the ISS, precluding the possibility of executing the final Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission which had been scheduled before the Columbia accident, despite the fact that millions of dollars worth of upgrade equipment for Hubble were ready and waiting in NASA warehouses.

In 2004, the facility was utilized for foam-debris dynamics testing in support of the Return To Flight effort.

STS-114 Discovery ( 26 July-9 August 2005 ) was the Return to Flight mission following the Columbia accident during which the crew continued the assembly of the International Space Station.

After the Columbia accident, he led the NASA Return to Flight Planning Team, responsible for converting the recommendations of the accident investigation board into Shuttle Program actions that resulted in resumption of missions in 2005.

STS-26 was declared the " Return to Flight " mission, being the first mission after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster of 28 January 1986.

In the end, it took Truly and NASA's " Return to Flight " program 31 months before the Space Shuttle Discovery successfully flew on September 29, 1988 with STS-26.

On August 3, 2005, as a Mission Specialist ( and Flight Engineer ) on STS-114, the first Return to Flight mission following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, Robinson became the first human to perform an in-flight repair to the Shuttle's exterior.
