When General Sumner refused to allow the Army's Gatling Gun Detachment-which had priority-to disembark from the transport Cherokee on the grounds that the lieutenant commanding the Detachment did not have the rank to enforce his priority, Shafter had to personally intervene, returning to the ship in a steam launch to enforce his demand that the guns come off immediately.

Brooks County was created 11 December 1858 from portions of Lowndes and Thomas counties by an act of the Georgia General Assembly named in honor of Preston Brooks, famous and acclaimed throughout the South for having beaten to unconsciousness, Senator Charles Sumner in 1856 in Congress.

General Carleton's " solution " was brutal: thousands of starving Navajo were forced on a Long Walk of 450 miles and interned near Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and much of their livestock was destroyed.

Before the men on Kettle Hill could withdraw, General Wheeler called aside Generals Kent and Sumner, and reassured them that the line could be held.

General Sumner, with the assistance of his newly acquired business partners Steven White and Francis J. Oliver, purchased this at $ 100 an acre or $ 32, 500.

These were led by three green North Carolina battalions under Brigadier General Jethro Sumner.

He participated in the suppression of the Chicago railroad riots of 1894, then went to Cuba as an aide to General Sumner ( 1898 – 1899 ) during the Spanish American War.

The corps was organized under General Orders No. 101, March 21, 1862, which assigned Brigadier General Edwin Vose Sumner to its command, and Brigadier Generals Israel B. Richardson, John Sedgwick, and Louis Blenker to the command of its divisions.

In the meantime Sumner had been promoted to the command of a Grand Division — II and IX Corps — and General Darius N. Couch, a division commander of the IV Corps, was appointed to his place.

The fort was named for General Edmond Vose Sumner.
