* December 20-Rubin Carter produces one of Emile Griffith's two knockout defeats, scoring a technical knockout over the world Welterweight champion in round one of a non-title bout, Pittsburgh.

After Collins's and Griffith's deaths in August 1922, W. T. Cosgrave became both Chairman of the Provisional Government and President of Dáil Éireann, and the distinction between the two became increasingly confused and irrelevant up until the creation of the Irish Free State in December 1922.

Intolerance was made partly in response to criticism of Griffith's previous film, The Birth of a Nation ( 1915 ), which was attacked by the NAACP and other groups as perpetuating racial stereotypes and glorifying the Ku Klux Klan.

The first appearance of gore — the realistic mutilation of the human body — in cinema can be traced to D. W.
