Havergal Brian ( born William Brian, 29 January 187628 November 1972 ), was a British classical composer.

William Brian ( he adopted the name " Havergal " from a local family of hymn-writers ) was born in Dresden, a district of Stoke-on-Trent, and was one of a very small number of composers to originate from the English working class.

Her father, William Henry Havergal ( 1793 – 1870 ), was a clergyman, writer, composer, and hymnwriter.

At Oxford he was a friend of William Henry Havergal.

Her brother, Henry East Havergal, was a priest in the Church of England and an organist.

Hovhaness is also notable for having written 67 numbered symphonies, whilst Englishman Havergal Brian wrote 32.

There is also an operatic version by the British composer Havergal Brian.

It has inspired major musical works in other forms, such as the " dramatic legend " The Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust, the second part of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Franz Liszt's Faust Symphony and Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony.

The first commercial recording of Havergal Brian's music was made by the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra in 1972, when Symphonies Nos.

In 1979, Cameo Classics embarked on a project to record all of Brian's orchestral music in collaboration with the Havergal Brian Society.

Other notable performances included the first Proms performance of Havergal Brian's Symphony No. 1 (' The Gothic '), which was also the 6th live performance ever, and subsequently released on a Hyperion commercial recording.

* Havergal Brian, the English composer, moved from London to Shoreham-by-Sea in 1958 ; he wrote twenty symphonies there over the next ten years.

British playwright and actor Giles Havergal wrote a version for stage, first presented at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow on 10 November 1989.

However, the programme also covers more ' difficult ' or less-widely known composers, with weeks devoted to Rubbra, Medtner, Havergal Brian and the Minimalists among others.

Among English composers of the early-20th century there was some vogue for the use of a " bass oboe ", for example in Gustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets ( 1916 ), as well as in several works of Frederick Delius ( A Mass of Life, 1904-1905 ; Dance Rhapsody No. 1, 1908 ), Arnold Bax's Symphony No. 1 ( 1921 ), Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony ( 1919-1927 ) and Symphony No. 4 ( Das Siegeslied ), and supposedly in the original instrumentation of Ralph Vaughan Williams ' A London Symphony ( 1912-1913 ).

He was a close friend of fellow composer Havergal Brian.

Over the decades other games were added to the roster, including a game involving the school's Junior Varsity team, the final game of the house hockey tournament, and a game between Havergal College and Bishop Strachan School.

Though Bishop Strachan School ( BSS ) is located only two blocks from UCC, it is not UCC's sister school, UCC students do, however, work on joint projects with students of other nearby girls ' schools, including BSS, St. Clement's School, Havergal College, and Branksome Hall.

Early in January, 1844 he had a conference with Henry and William in New Orleans, and upon learning of Gorham's intention, Henry remonstrated calmly but firmly with his brother.

Henry hid his annoyance, although both he and William were furious with their Yankee brother.

News of the legislative veto appeared in the New Orleans papers, and Henry and William became incensed by the fact that they had not been told of the attempt in advance.

On March 21, 1845 the bark Bashaw weighed anchor at New Orleans, while on the levee Henry and William Palfrey waved farewell to their father's former chattels who must have looked back at the receding shore with mingled regret and jubilation.

Argon ( αργος, Greek meaning " inactive ", in reference to its chemical inactivity ) was suspected to be present in air by Henry Cavendish in 1785 but was not isolated until 1894 by Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay in Scotland in an experiment in which they removed all of the oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen from a sample of clean air.
