* The 2010 EA video game Dante's Inferno as a boss alongside a giant Cleopatra in the second circle of hell ( lust ), his last words to Cleopatra are " you said we'd be together for eternity " before disappearing.

La Vita Nuova contains 42 brief chapters ( 31 for Guglielmo Gorni ) with commentaries on 25 sonnets, one ballata, and four canzoni ; one canzone is left unfinished, interrupted by the death of Beatrice Portinari, Dante's lifelong love.

In fact, Flaxman's 110 illustrations of Dante's Divine Comedy are known as one of his greatest achievements: deceptively simple, awash with pathos, and recalling antique imagery in a classical Greek style, they themselves became an inspiration for such artists as Goya and Ingres, and were used as an academic source for 19th century art students.

The words of Dante's character as he exhorts his men to the journey find parallel in those of Tennyson's Ulysses, who calls his men to join him on one last voyage.

More recent criticism has pointed to the subtle, shifting symbolism of the pearl as one of the poem's chief virtues, recognizing that there is no inherent contradiction between the poem's elegiac and its allegorical aspects, and that the sophisticated allegorical significance of the Pearl Maiden is not unusual but in fact has several quite well known parallels in medieval literature, the most celebrated being probably Dante's Beatrice.

The brief battle resulted in the death of one of Dante's friends and fellow sensei, Jim Koncevic.
