Since Infante John's and Infante Peter's deaths in 1939, Infante Philip ( son of Sancho IV and María de Molina, thus brother of Infante Peter ), Juan Manuel ( the king's second-degree uncle by virtue of being Ferdinand III's grandson ) and Juan el Tuerto ( the late Juan's son and the king's second-degree uncle ) split the kingdom among themselves according to their aspirations for regency, even as it was being looted by moors and Levantine nobility.

In Lisbon, Alvaro Pais proposed that he and Leonor marry and hold the regency together, but Leonor declined ; upon the news of the coming of the Castilian king, the Master of Aviz was elected Regent and Defender of the Realm on 16 December 1383, as an advocate for the rights of the queen's son, the Infante Juan.

During that time, several dignitaries and exiles came to Estoril: Miklós Horthy, the regent of Hungary ( lived and died in exile after the Second World War ); the Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona ( father of Juan Carlos I of Spain ) and the King resided in the territory, as did Umberto II of Italy and Carol II of Romania.

The Infante Juan of Spain, Count of Barcelona ( Juan Carlos Teresa Silvestre Alfonso de Borbón y Battenberg ; English: John Charles Therese Sylvester Alphonse of Bourbon and Battenberg ) ( 20 June 1913 – 1 April 1993 ), was the third surviving son and designated heir of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, the monarch replaced by the Second Spanish Republic, and father of King Juan Carlos I, under whom a constitutional monarchy was restored.

Owing to the renunciations of his brothers Alfonso of Spain, Prince of Asturias, and Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia, Infante Juan was thus next in line to the defunct Spanish throne.

Just before the birth of the Infante Juan Carlos, the Count of Barcelona decided to go hunting, with the doctor telling him and his wife that the future king would not be born for weeks.

Don Carlos is a five-act grand opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi to a French language libretto by Camille du Locle and Joseph Méry, based on the dramatic play Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien ( Don Carlos, Infante of Spain ) by Friedrich Schiller.

The reign of Ferdinand VII ( reigned 1808 – 33 ) saw several Catalan uprisings and after his death the conflict over the succession between the absolutist " Carlist " partisans of Infante Carlos and the liberal partisans of Isabella II led to the First Carlist War, which lasted until 1840 and was especially virulent in the Catalan territory.

Others going extinct, the eldest son, Infante Pedro Carlos of Spain and Portugal ( 1786 – 1812 ) married his Portuguese cousin Teresa, Princess of Beira, and left issue ( see below ).

John VI followed the first tradition also, and Beira was granted to his eldest daughter infanta dona Maria Teresa, firstly wife of her short-lived cousin Infante Pedro Carlos of Spain and Portugal and secondly of the first Carlist pretender, Infante don Carlos of Spain.

Moctezuma Barragán is the son of architect Pedro Moctezuma Diaz Infante and María Teresa Barragán Álvarez.

* Infante Jaime Luitpold Isabelino Enrique Alberto Alfonso Victor Acacio Pedro Maria of Spain ( 1908 – 1975 ), a deaf-mute as the result of a childhood operation, he renounced his rights to the throne in 1933 and became Duke of Segovia, and later Duke of Madrid, and who, as a legitimist pretender to the French throne from 1941 to 1975, was known as the Duke of Anjou.

The Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia, son of Alfonso XIII of Spain, was one of the Legitimist pretenders to the French throne ; as such he created his son Gonzalo, Duke of Aquitaine ( 1972 – 2000 ); Gonzalo had no legitimate children.

According to the chroniclers, he cemented his hold on power by executing 4, 000 other followers of Infante Alfonso, son of Ferdinand de la Cerda, in Badajoz.

To secure the agreement, Infante Sancho of Portugal married, in 1174, Infanta Dulce of Aragon, younger sister of King Alfonso II of Aragon.

The majority of Carlists, however, considered that Alfonso was disqualified because he did not share the Carlist ideals ( and, more importantly, because Spanish law excluded from succession the descendants of those who had committed treason against the king, just as Alfonso's male-line ancestors had done, according to carlists, ever since Infante Francisco de Paula's recognition of Isabella II ), and many regarded his descent as illegitimate, believing that Alfonso XII's biological father was Isabella II's lover Enrique Puigmoltó y Mayans, Captain of the Royal Guard, or even General Francisco Serrano.

He was the son of King Alfonso XII, son of Francisco de Asis de Borbón, son of Infante Francisco de Paula, the younger brother of Carlos V. He was recognised as Carlist claimant by a minority of Carlists who considered the death of Alfonso Carlos an opportunity to reunite Spanish monarchists both Carlist and Isabelline.

:* Infante Jaime, Duke of Segovia was the second son of Alfonso, and the older brother of Juan, Count of Barcelona.

On 25 April 1985, her remains were returned to Spain and reinterred in the Royal Vault in the Escorial, outside Madrid, next to the remains of her husband, Alfonso XIII, and her sons, Infante Don Alfonso, Infante Don Jaime, and Infante Don Gonzalo.
