The decade started with Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon ( 1950 ), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and marked the entrance of Japanese cinema onto the world stage.

Gate of Hell, a 1953 film by Teinosuke Kinugasa, was the first movie that filmed using Eastmancolor film, Gate of Hell was both Daiei's first color film and the first Japanese color movie to be released outside of Japan, receiving an Oscar in 1954 for Best Costume Design by Sanzo Wada and an Honorary Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

It also won the Palme d ' Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the first Japanese film to achieve that honour.

Japanese Fantasy Film Journal ( JFFJ ) ( 1968 – 1983 ) from Greg Shoemaker covered Toho's Godzilla and his Asian brethren when no other publications much cared.

It has received many awards, including Best Picture at the 2001 Japanese Academy Awards, Golden Bear ( First Prize ) at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival, and the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

It was also voted the " Best Japanese Film ever " in a 1979 Kinema Junpo critics ’ poll.

Honokaʻa is the namesake and prominent setting in the 2009 Japanese Film Honokaʻa Boy ( Japanese: ホノカアボーイ ).

Rocky III was nominated for both the Award of the Japanese Academy for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Motion Picture at the Image Awards.

The film appeared at the 1951 Venice Film Festival at the behest of an Italian language teacher, Giuliana Stramigioli, who had recommended it to Italian film promotion agency Unitalia Film seeking a Japanese film to screen at the festival.

Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. was established in 1934 with the aim of being the first Japanese producer of photographic films.

This prompted the managing director of Daiei Film Co., Ltd. to dub the week " Golden Week " based on the Japanese radio lingo “ golden time ,” which denotes the period with the highest listener ratings.

* Bon festival – ( Obon Festival ) is a Japanese traditional buddhist custom, evolved into a family reunion holiday.

At the 2010 New York Comic Con / New York Anime Festival, Bandai Entertainment announced that they will re-release the Gundam TV series with both Japanese and English dubs.

A few examples are the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Canada, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Louisiana, the BBC Proms in Royal Albert Hall, London, the Verbier Festival in the mountain resort of Verbier, Switzerland, and the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto in the Japanese Alps near Matsumoto.

The Bon Festival (, or only, is a Japanese Buddhist holiday in August to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors.

Ashoka, the South Asian student association, puts on a performance for Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, that includes a skit and dances ; Black Anthology is a student-run performance arts show celebrating black culture ; Lunar New Year Festival is a collaboration between the many East Asian organizations on campus culminating in a show to celebrate the holiday with a skit and dances from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures ; the Association of Latin American Students showcases various forms of Latin and Spanish dances during their performance, Carnaval.

In 2006, the Japanese acting trope Ninagawa Company staged a version of the play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre as part of the Complete Works Festival, under the title Taitasu Andoronikasu.

" The Cultural Festival " ( Bunkasai ) and " The University Festival " ( Daigaku-sai ) are common nouns in Japanese, so particular names of cultural festivals depend on each school.

In observance of the 2007 Japanese Hanabi Festival, the original The Lost Levels was made available as a download for the Wii's Virtual Console service.

In the Japanese light novel and anime series Shakugan no Shana, Xanadu is the name of the paradise to be created by the God of Creation ( Snake of the Festival ).

The band were in the top five foreign acts in Japan, and after winning the coveted Silver Award in the Tokyo International Song Festival, Shakatak were asked to produce an extra album each year exclusively for the Japanese market.

The Double Ninth Festival ( Chung Yeung Festival in Hong Kong, Japanese:, ), observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writing since before the East Han period ( before AD 25 ).

A personal high point was the reception of the Japanese surrender in Singapore when British troops returned to the island to receive the formal surrender of Japanese forces in the region led by General Itagaki Seishiro on 12 September 1945, codenamed Operation Tiderace.

They quickly gained air superiority over the Allies, who at this stage of the war were often disorganized, under-trained and poorly equipped, and Japanese air power contributed significantly to their successes in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, the Dutch East Indies and Burma.

In the South-East Asian Theatre there was the siege of Singapore and in the Burma Campaign sieges of Myitkyina, the Admin Box, Imphal and Kohima which was the high-water mark for the Japanese advance into India.

* December 10 – WWII: The British battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse are sunk by Japanese aircraft in the South China Sea north of Singapore.

They inspected Japanese military bases at Nagasaki, Kobe and Kyoto, then headed to India via Shanghai, Hong Kong, Java and Singapore, reaching Calcutta in January 1906.

During the same meeting on 18 March 1941, Raeder said he wanted Japan to enter the war as soon as possible, stating that a Japanese attack on the British base at Singapore would force the Royal Navy to deploy most of its strength to the Far East, and thereby allow the Kriegsmarine to win the Battle of the Atlantic.

The only problem with bringing about this scenario Raeder mentioned was that the Japanese had informed him that they would attack Singapore only " if Germany proceeds to land in England ".

To further those goals, Japanese forces captured the Philippines, Thailand, Malaya, Singapore, Burma, the Dutch East Indies, Wake Island, Gilbert Islands, New Britain and Guam.

* The Provisional Government of Free India ( 1943 – 1945 ), set up in Singapore in October 1943 by Subhash Chandra Bose and alleged by the Allies to have been a puppet state, it was in charge of Indian expatriates and military personnel in Japanese Southeast Asia.

Z Force, an Australian-British-New Zealand military intelligence commando unit, formed by the Australian Services Reconnaissance Department, also carried out many raiding and reconnaissance operations in the South West Pacific theatre, most notably Operation Jaywick, in which they destroyed tonnes of Japanese shipping at Singapore Harbour.

* January 1974: Laju incident: Red Army attacked a Shell facility in Singapore and took five hostages ; simultaneously, the PFLP seized the Japanese embassy in Kuwait.

However, in 2000 the Japanese group of 85 members expanded itself, becoming the Pacific Asia group, composed of 117 members: 75 Japanese, 11 South Koreans, 7 Australian and New Zealand citizens, and 15 members from the ASEAN nations ( Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand ).

Japanese forces initially experienced great success against Allied forces in the Pacific and South East Asia, capturing Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines and many Pacific Islands.
