He married Joanna, Countess of Flanders and Hainaut, daughter of the Latin Emperor Baldwin I, in 1237.

In 1496, Joanna, at the age of sixteen, was betrothed to Philip the Handsome, Duke of Burgundy ( titular ), in the region of Flanders in the Low Countries.

Joanna began her journey to Flanders in the Low Countries, which consisted of parts of the present day Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Germany, on 22 August 1496.

In 1500, shortly after the birth in Flanders of Joanna and Philip's second child ( the future Emperor Charles V ), the succession to the Castilian and Aragonese crowns was thrown into turmoil.

The earliest written sources present it as a purely chivalric exercise in masculine combat, undertaken to " honour " the ladies for whom the knights were fighting: referring to Joan, Duchess of Brittany ( House of Blois ) and Joanna of Flanders ( House of Montfort ).

When John died in 1345 in the midst of the Breton War of Succession, his wife Joanna of Flanders took arms to protect the rights of her son John V, Duke of Brittany against the party led by Charles and Joan.

It now fell upon John's wife, Joanna of Flanders to lead the Montfortist cause.

Charles tries to take advantage and attacks Hennebont, but the city is defended with success by Joanna of Flanders, wife of Montfort.

His ambitions over Brittany are inherited by is son John V. His mother, Joanna of Flanders, becomes the political and military commander of the Montfort faction.

In 1322 he succeeded his mother as count of Montfort, and in 1329, he married Joanna of Flanders at Chartres.

He was son of John de Montfort and Joanna of Flanders.

Joanna of Flanders ( c. 1295 – September 1374 ), also known as Countess Jeanne, Jehanne de Montfort, and Jeanne la Flamme, was consort Duchess of Brittany by her marriage to John IV, Duke of Brittany.

An Infanta of Castile, Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Burgundy, Catherine was the posthumous daughter of Philip of Hapsburg by Joanna of Castile She was born in Torquemada and remained with her disturbed mother until the arrival in Spain from Flanders of her eldest siblings, Eleanor of Austria and the future Emperor Charles V. As such, Joanna was an Archduchess of Austria, Infanta of Castile and of Aragon, princess of Burgundy and Flanders, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, etc.

Hennebont is famed for its resistance, under Joanna of Flanders, the widow of Jean de Montfort, to the armies of Philip of Valois and Charles of Blois when besieged in 1342 during the War of the Breton Succession.

Preoccupied by the coronation of Louis at the hands of Pope Urban VI, and by Louis ' military power, Charles had Joanna killed on 27 July 1382 at the age of 56 ; she was smothered with pillows, in revenge for the method of assassination inflicted upon Duke Andrew.

On the death of his father-in-law in 1355, he took the title of Duke of Brabant, but was unable to wrest the duchy from his sister-in-law Joanna, Duchess of Brabant in the War of the Brabantian Succession.

John was born in Seville in 1478 to the sovereigns of Castile, Isabella I and Ferdinand V. At the time, his parents were involved in the War of Castilian Succession against Isabella's niece Joanna la Beltraneja, wife of King Afonso V of Portugal.
