In the Treaty of Speyer of August 16, 1570, John II Sigismund acknowledged his rival, Maximilian I ( 1564 – 1576 ) as the lawful king of Hungary and adopted the title of " prince of Transylvania and parts of the Kingdom of Hungary ".

In order to achieve an alliance with Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, Maximilian started negotiating the marriage of their only son and heir, John, Prince of Asturias, to Margaret, as well as the marriage of their daughter, Joanna, to Philip.

He was consequently placed under the imperial ban, but John Frederick II refused to obey the order of Emperor Maximilian II to withdraw his protection from him.

He has one son by his first marriage, Maximilian John Gerald, born 19 December 1991.

On 20 January 1495 in Antwerp, a preliminary alliance, which included a wedding of Prince John with Maximilian ’ s daughter was agreed.

The York Factory Express trade route evolved from an earlier express brigade used by the North West Company between Fort George ( originally Fort Astoria founded in 1811 by John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company ), at the mouth of the Columbia River, to Fort William on Lake Superior.
