The canonization of Saint Udalric, Bishop of Augsburg, by Pope John XV in 999 is the first undoubted example of a papal canonization of a saint from outside Rome ( Some historians maintain that the first such canonization was that of Saint Swibert by Pope Leo III in 804 ).

The following year, Pope Leo X ( 1513 – 21 ) made Adrian a cardinal, naming him Cardinal Priest of the Basilica of Saints John and Paul.

Because Sergius III had reputedly ordered the murder of his two immediate predecessors, Leo V and Christopher and was the only pope to have allegedly fathered an illegitimate son who later became pope ( John XI ), his pontificate has been described as " dismal and disgraceful ".

Papal interest in Christio-Muslim relations in the peninsular are not without precedent-Popes Leo IV ( 847-855 ), John VIII ( 872-882 ) and John XIX ( 1024 – 33 ) are all known to have displayed substantial interest in the region.
