* August 5 – John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie, Scottish conspirator ( b. 1577 )

The so-called Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, in which the young Earl of Gowrie, John Ruthven, and his brother Alexander Ruthven were killed by James's attendants for a supposed assault on the King, triggered the dismissal of their sisters Beatrix and Barbara Ruthven as ladies-in-waiting to Anne, with whom they were " in chiefest credit.

Navy ; Lyman T Johnson, civil rights movement ; and Raphael Benjamin West former Nashville mayor and Civil Rights ally, noted architect James Edwin Ruthven Carpenter, Jr. and John Harlan Willis, United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the Medal of Honor — for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

A Swedish-allied army under general Johan Baner decisively defeated a combined Imperial-Saxon army, led by Count Melchior von Hatzfeld and the Saxon Elector John George I. Baner was helped by Swedish Count Lennart Torstenson and Scottish professional soldiers Alexander Leslie, later first Earl of Leven, James King, later first Lord Eythin, and John Ruthven.

Baner and Leslie had detached one-fourth of the army under General James King, General John Ruthven and General Torsten Stålhandske to take a long detour around the Imperial right flank.

These allies were John Drummond of Cargill, made Lord Drummond ; Robert Crichton of Sanquhar, made Lord Sanquhar ; John Hay of Yester, made Lord Hay of Yester ; and the Knight William Ruthven, made Lord Ruthven.

He, Larry Bowa, Garry Maddox, Dick Ruthven and Del Unser took on five members of the Kansas City Royals: Dennis Leonard, Dan Quisenberry, Paul Splittorff, John Wathan and Willie Wilson.

Since Ruthven was run through by James's page John Ramsay and the Earl of Gowrie was himself killed in the ensuing fracas, there were few surviving witnesses.

The second castle built at Ruthven was fought over during the Civil Wars of the 17th century and was badly damaged by John Graham, 1st Viscount of Dundee and the Jacobites in the rising of 1689.

John Ruthven, 3rd Earl of Gowrie ( c. 1577 – 5 August 1600 ) was a Scottish nobleman, the second son of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and his wife Dorothea Stewart.

As he set out, accompanied by the Duke of Lennox, the Earl of Mar, Thomas Erskine and others, he was approached by the twenty year old Alexander Ruthven, a younger brother of John Ruthven.

Despite having received word earlier that the king would be arriving, John Ruthven had made no preparations, thus giving the impression of having been taken by surprise.

While John the Baptist's use of a deep river for his baptism suggests immersion, pictorial and archaeological evidence of Christian baptism from the 3rd century onward indicates that a normal form was to have the candidate stand in water while water was poured over the upper body.

Oxford was the only son of John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding.

He was born on 12 April 1550 at the de Vere ancestral home, Castle Hedingham, the only son of John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford and his second wife, Margery Golding.

Both the 16th Earl and the Countess of Oxford had established court connections: John accompanying Princess Elizabeth from house arrest at Hatfield to the throne, and Margery being appointed a Maid of Honor in 1559.
