Ivanhoe is sometimes credited for increasing interest in Romanticism and Medievalism ; John Henry Newman claimed Scott " had first turned men's minds in the direction of the middle ages ," while Carlyle and Ruskin made similar claims to Scott's overwhelming influence over the revival based primarily on the publication of this novel.

Musical Impressionism beyond France includes the work of such composers as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ottorino Respighi ( Italy ) and Cyril Scott and John Ireland ( England ).

The antiquary was satirised in John Earle's Micro-cosmographie of 1628 (" Hee is one that hath that unnaturall disease to bee enamour'd of old age, and wrinkles, and loves all things ( as Dutchmen doe Cheese ) the better for being mouldy and worme-eaten "), in Jean-Siméon Chardin's painting " Le Singe Antiquaire " ( c. 1726 ), in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Antiquary ( 1816 ), in the caricatures of Thomas Rowlandson, and in many other places.

Scott's more than 30 years as a motion picture actor resulted in his working with many acclaimed screen directors, including Henry King, Rouben Mamoulian, Michael Curtiz, John Cromwell, King Vidor, Alan Dwan, Fritz Lang, and Sam Peckinpah.

The other two were among the best in Scott's career: Village Tale ( 1935 ), " a touching, still-obscure melodrama about small-town gossip and hypocrisy " directed by John Cromwell, and She ( 1935 ), a superb adventure-fantasy adapted from H. Rider Haggard's 1886 novel.

Scott's only role as a truly evil villain was in Universal's The Spoilers, a rip-roaring adaptation of Rex Beach's 1905 tale of the Alaskan gold rush co-starring Marlene Dietrich and John Wayne.

In Scott's novel the town hosts an important archery competition held by Prince John, in which Robin Hood competes and wins.

One notable 1968 production starred George C. Scott as John Proctor, Colleen Dewhurst ( Scott's wife at the time ) as Elizabeth Proctor, Melvyn Douglas as Thomas Danforth, and Tuesday Weld as Abigail Williams.

Ballantyne was in difficulties, and Constable again became Scott's publisher, a condition being that the firm of John Ballantyne & Co. should be wound up at an early date, though Scott retained his interest in the printing business of James Ballantyne & Co.

He found his ideal contributors in John Wilson ( who wrote as Christopher North ) and John Gibson Lockhart ( later Walter Scott's son-in-law and biographer ).

Birkbeck Hill's sister Laura was the second wife of Sir John Scott's father.
