When Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Johnson was a Democratic U. S. Senator from Tennessee and was dedicated to Jacksonian Democracy, nationalism and limited government.

The Tennessee Senate, controlled by Democrats and led by Johnson, boycotted the joint session and blocked the filling of both the US Senate seats, denying Tennessee representation in the U. S. Senate until 1843.

In 1843, Johnson was the first Democrat to run for, and win, election as the U. S. representative from Tennessee's 1st congressional district, and joined a new Democratic majority in the House.

Johnson succeeded in getting the bank appointments he wanted, in return for his endorsement of John Bell for one of the state's U. S. Senate seats.

On April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, who conspired to coordinate assassinations of others, including Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of State William H. Seward that same night.

Rep. Samuel S. Cox saw Johnson at this time and remarked that, when asked if the President would modify his views, " He got as ugly as the devil.

Ulysses S. Grant, whom Johnson appointed as Stanton's interim successor, advised against the action, but accepted the temporary appointment when Johnson proceeded with Stanton's suspension in August.

In the early 21st century, Johnson is among those commonly mentioned as the worst presidents in U. S. history.

In 2007, U. S. Department of Defense ’ s Telemedicine and Advanced Technologies Research Center ( TATRC ) began to study the antimicrobial properties of copper alloys, including four brasses ( C87610, C69300, C26000, C46400 ) in a multi-site clinical hospital trial conducted at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center ( New York City ), the Medical University of South Carolina, and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center ( South Carolina ).

This made Clinton only the second U. S. president to be impeached ( the first being Andrew Johnson ).
