Kraftwerk's Autobahn ( 1974 ) was one of the first successful pop / rock albums to feature vocoder vocals.

Meanwhile, Humphreys & McCluskey collaborated on a side-project called VCL XI ( named after a misreading of a valve from the diagram on the back cover of Kraftwerk's Radio-Activity album ; the name of valve is actually written with Arabic numbers, VCL 11, and not Roman numerals ).

The second album Organisation ( perhaps a reference to the band which preceded Kraftwerk, founded by Kraftwerk's original members Florian Schneider-Esleben and Ralf Hütter ) followed later that year, recorded as a 3 piece with Humphreys, McCluskey and Holmes.

" Kristallo " features a striking rhythmic electronic bassline ( actually created on the EMS synthesizer with the aid of the vocoder ), however in general the album is much gentler and less rhythmically precise than Kraftwerk's later electronic work.

Overall, the sound has a rather muted, twilit, dusky feel, similar in feel to " Megaherz " on Kraftwerk's debut album, as Hütter & Schneider explored the possibilities for electronic and auto-mechanical enhancement of their music.

The theme song for the sketch is Kraftwerk's 1986 song " Electric Café ", sped up by playing the 33⅓ rpm album at 45 rpm, then looped.

The name perhaps derives from the repetitive yet forward-flowing feel of the rhythm, which has been compared to the experience of motorway driving -- indeed, the motorik beat is in one section of Kraftwerk's " Autobahn ", a song designed to celebrate exactly this experience.

The lyrics were co-written by Ralf Hütter and Maxime Schmitt — who had previously been manager of the Capitol label at Pathé-Marconi ( part of the EMI group, the company that distributed Kraftwerk's music in France ) and had been involved with the band since the mid-1970s.
