Laurence Edward Alan " Laurie " Lee, MBE ( 26 June 1914 – 13 May 1997 ) was an English poet, novelist, and screenwriter, raised in the village of Slad, and went to Marling School, Gloucestershire.
In the 1960s, Laurie Lee and his wife returned to Slad to live near his childhood home, where they remained for the rest of his life.
Lee revealed on the BBC1 Wogan Show in 1985 that he was frequently asked by children, visiting Slad as part of their O-Level study of Cider with Rosie, enquiring " where Laurie Lee was buried " assuming that the author was dead.
Laurie Lee died of bowel cancer in Slad on 13 May 1997, at the age of 82.
In 1967, after a period working as a folk singer, he formed a folk band called The Sugar Shoppe with Peter Mann, Laurie Hood and Lee Harris.
