Francesco's wife was the cultured intellectual Isabella d ' Este, the sister of Alfonso, to whom Lucrezia had made overtures of friendship to no avail.

In 1502 and 1503 he was again in Ferrara, and had a love affair with the notorious Lucrezia Borgia, who was the wife of Alfonso d ' Este.

Maria was the wife of Francesco d ' Este, Marchese di Massalombarda, a captain under Charles V ; Francesco was a son of the notorious Lucrezia Borgia, and her husband Alfonso I d ' Este ).

Legend has it that tagliatelle was created by a talented court chef, who was inspired by Lucrezia d ' Este's hairdo on the occasion of her marriage to Annibale II Bentivoglio, in 1487.

The Villa d ' Este was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d ' Este, son of Alfonso I d ' Este and Lucrezia Borgia and grandson of Pope Alexander VI.

While in Ferrara Marenzio wrote and dedicated two entire books of new madrigals to Alfonso II and Lucrezia d ' Este.

Writing of the " intermezzi " at the wedding of Lucrezia Borgia in 1502, Isabella d ' Este said that they were more interesting than the boring commedia, " a remark destined to be often repeated ".

She was married in April 1528 to Ercole II, Duke of Ferrara, eldest son of Alfonso I d ' Este and Lucrezia Borgia.

From 1502 Tromboncino was employed by the even more infamous Lucrezia Borgia in Ferrara, where he wrote music for the famous intermedi of her opulent court, and most significantly for her wedding to Alfonso d ' Este.

She had an older brother Gian Galeazzo Sforza, who married their first cousin, Isabella of Naples, by whom he had issue, and a younger sister Anna Sforza, first wife of Alfonso I d ' Este, Duke of Ferrara, who, after Anna's death in childbirth, would marry secondly, Lucrezia Borgia.

Relations were also later repaired with some of Odoardo's former allies when Taddeo's daughter, Lucrezia Barberini married Francesco I d ' Este, Duke of Modena who had led Modenese forces against the Barberini.

The poem is preceded by the word Ferrara :, indicating that the speaker is most likely Alfonso II d ' Este, the fifth Duke of Ferrara ( 1533 – 1598 ) who, at the age of 25, married Lucrezia di Cosimo de ' Medici, 14-year-old daughter of Cosimo I de ' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Eleonora di Toledo.

Lucrezia Borgia (; 18 April 1480 – 24 June 1519 ) was the illegitimate daughter of Rodrigo Borgia, the powerful Renaissance Valencian who later became Pope Alexander VI, and Vannozza dei Cattanei.

His son Alfonso II first married Lucrezia, daughter of grand-duke Cosimo I of Tuscany, then after becoming a widower, Barbara, the sister of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor ( 1527 – 1576 ) and finally a third wife, Margherita Gonzaga, daughter of the duke of Mantua.

Tarquinia, unlike Wert, but like Lucrezia, was a member of the nobility, and when her affair with Wert was found out in 1589 – their affair was plagued with spies, and their love-letters opened – she was banished to Modena.
