* Marienkirche ( Saint Mary's Church, 1233 )

The oldest extant structure is Saint Mary's Church ( Marienkirche ), built in AD 704.

When Adam and Maria Dorothea Struensee moved to Altona in 1758, where the elder Struensee became pastor of Marienkirche ( Mary ’ s Church ), Johann Friedrich moved with them.

The 80 m high tower church of St Mary ( Marienkirche ) is the only remainder of the original Brick Gothic edifice, built in the first half of the 13th century.

The church of St Nicholas ( Nikolaikirche ), built in 1381 – 1460, with very lofty vaulting, together with the Marienkirche, are regarded as good examples of the influence exercised in these northern provinces by the large church of St Mary in Lübeck.

The Latin Rite's Canon of the Mass contains the names only of martyrs, along with that of the Virgin Mary and, since 1962, that of Saint Joseph.
