* In the 2009 film, Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty appears as a shadowy, mysterious villain employing Irene Adler.

* Moriarty appears in a short story by Donald Thomas, in his collection The Secret Cases of Sherlock Holmes, as the mastermind of a blackmail plot involving the alleged bigamy of Prince George.

There were enough holes in eyewitness accounts to allow Conan Doyle to plausibly resurrect Holmes ; only the few free surviving members of Moriarty's organisation and Holmes ' brother Mycroft ( who appears briefly in this story ) know that Sherlock Holmes is still alive, having won the struggle at Reichenbach Falls and sent Moriarty to his death – though nearly meeting his own at the hands of Moriarty's henchmen.

The episode is very close to the source, as was typical of the entire series, with some minor departures: Adair is still alive at the start of the episode, Watson unsuccessfully tries to protect him as instructed by Holmes, Watson briefly becomes a prime suspect in Adair's murder, Watson and Mrs. Hudson faint when the presumed deceased Holmes appears at Baker Street, and both Holmes and Moriarty are made masters of the martial art baritsu, with a dramatic battle between the two.

He activates it to find the artificial sentient Professor James Moriarty ( Daniel Davis ) character projected into the Holodeck, who appears to have memory since his creation (" Elementary, Dear Data "), including during the period while he was inactive ( a feat Picard claims to be impossible ).

Data determines that he himself, Picard, and Barclay never left the holodeck, and everyone and everything that appears to be the Enterprise are part of a holodeck program Moriarty created.

" A modified version of the song, referring to " lightning ( fast ) French alopecia, from the song of the same name ", appears in " Call of the West ", an episode of The Goon Show, sung by Hercules Grytpype-Thynne and Count Jim Moriarty.

Moran appears as a minor character in Alan Moore's comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume I, as an underling of Moriarty, where they are both secret agents who are assigned by MI5 to create a criminal empire through which the government can be in control of the criminal underworld.

He appears briefly in Michael Kurland's ' Professor Moriarty ' novel Death by Gaslight as an associate of the professor, and in a much larger role in the later The Empress of India, where he enlists Moriarty's help in retrieving a golden statue.

He appears in David Stuart Davies's The Veiled Detective, a novel based mainly around a retelling of part of A Study in Scarlet, in which Dr. Watson is planted in Holmes's life by Professor Moriarty in order to monitor and report back on him.

Moran appears in the book The File on Colonel Moran-Volume One: The Lure of Moriarty by Vernon Mealor, the first part being a first person account by the colonel of his pursuit of Holmes and his arrest for the Adair murder, the other two stories being accounts of his early days with Moriarty, presented as stories related by a reporter who conducted interviews with him.

* In the 2003 film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, an adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore, Richard Roxburgh portrays the main villain named the Fantom, whose true identity was eventually revealed to be Professor James Moriarty, who also posed as the League's recruiter M ; with a blackmailed Dorian Gray as his agent, Moriarty acquired samples from the League with the intention of duplicating their powers for his own goals.

* In the movie version of Alan Moore's " League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ", the Phantom ( a character created for the movie ) owes more than a little to Fantômas, although he is ultimately revealed to be Professor Moriarty.

The all-star cast featured Nicol Williamson as Holmes, Robert Duvall as Watson, Alan Arkin as Dr. Sigmund Freud, with Laurence Olivier as Moriarty, Charles Gray as Mycroft Holmes ( the role he reprised in the Jeremy Brett TV series ), Samantha Eggar as Mary Watson, Vanessa Redgrave as Lola Devereaux, Joel Grey as Lowenstein, and Jeremy Kemp as Baron von Leinsdorf and Williamson's then wife Jill Townsend playing his character's mother ( Mrs. Holmes ).

* P. H. Moriarty (" Razors ") and Alan Ford appear as members of Shand's gang.

* John Huston portrayed Moriarty in the made-for-TV movie Sherlock Holmes in New York opposite Roger Moore's Holmes, attempting to rob the bank of New York while threatening Irene Adler's son to prevent Holmes from investigating, although Holmes and Watson are able to rescue the son and solve the crime regardless.

Having eventually retrieved the cavorite, the League delivers it into the hands of their employer — none other than Professor Moriarty ( arch nemesis of Sherlock Holmes ), who plans to use it in an airship of his own, with which he will bomb his adversary's Limehouse lair flat, taking large parts of London and the League itself with it.

During the film he attempts to provoke a war using advanced weaponry that he has developed ( Moriarty was perpetrating a similar scheme as the Fantom in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ).

* Eric Porter portrayed Professor Moriarty in two episodes of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes: " The Red-Headed League " and " The Final Problem ", and briefly in the Return of Sherlock Holmes episode: " The Empty House ".

In The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier, it is suggested that Jack Kerouac's Dean Moriarty ( from On the Road ) is his great-grandson, and the rivalry between the two criminals is continued by the fact that The Doctor's great-grandson is Kerouac's other creation, Doctor Sax.

The comic series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen adapts " The Final Problem " almost verbatim and shows Holmes triumphing over Moriarty and climbing the cliff, although Moriarty survives as well.
