Total Solar Irradiance upon Earth ( TSI ) was earlier measured by satellite to be roughly 1. 366 kilowatts per square meter ( kW / m² ), but most recently NASA cites TSI as " 1361 W / m² as compared to ~ 1366 W / m² from earlier observations et al., 2005 ", based on regular readings from NASA's Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment ( SORCE ) satellite, active since 2003, noting that this " discovery is critical in examining the energy budget of the planet Earth and isolating the climate change due to human activities.

The Obama Administration proposed a revision of Constellation in 2010 to focus on the development of the capability for crewed missions beyond low earth orbit ( LEO ), envisioning extending the operation of the ISS beyond 2020, transferring the development of launch vehicles for human crews from NASA to the private sector, and developing technology to enable missions to beyond LEO, such as Earth / Moon L1, the Moon, Earth / Sun L2, near-earth asteroids, and Phobos or Mars orbit.

Food was also important ; early Apollo crews complained about its quality, and a NASA volunteer found living on the Apollo food for four days on Earth to be intolerable ; its taste and composition, in the form of cubes and squeeze tubes, were unpleasant.

In 1991, Antonio Medina, a MIT graduate and NASA scientist, designed a virtual reality system to " drive " Mars rovers from Earth in apparent real time despite the substantial delay of Mars-Earth-Mars signals.

* November 10 – November 12 – Voyager program: The NASA space probe Voyager I makes its closest approach to Saturn, when it flies within 77, 000 miles of the planet's cloud-tops and sends the first high resolution images of the world back to scientists on Earth.

MOP was to be performed by radio antennas associated with the NASA Deep Space Network, as well as the radio telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia and the radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy ( SOFIA ) is a joint venture of the U. S. and German aerospace agencies, NASA and the DLR to make an infrared telescope platform that can fly at altitudes high enough to be in the infrared-transparent regime above the water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere.

Shortly after NASA was formed, the Orbiting Solar Observatory was launched, and was followed by the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory ( OAO ) that carried out ultraviolet observations of stars between 1968 and 1972.

The fate of the EUSO Observatory is still unclear since NASA is considering early retirement of the ISS.

NASA accepts proposals from researchers based in the United States, while the National Optical Astronomy Observatory ( NOAO ) accept proposals from researchers around the world.

The FITS Liberator software is used by imaging scientists at the European Space Agency, the European Southern Observatory and NASA.

The JPL SVLBI project, funded by NASA, supports the VSOP ( VLBI Space Observatory Program ) mission developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science ( ISAS ) in Japan.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory is a space telescope launched on STS-93 by NASA on July 23, 1999.

In 1976 the Chandra X-ray Observatory ( called AXAF at the time ) was proposed to NASA by Riccardo Giacconi and Harvey Tananbaum.

In July 2008, the International X-ray Observatory, a joint project between ESA, NASA and JAXA, was proposed as the next major X-ray observatory but was later cancelled.
