Current services includes suburban routes to Larne, Newry and Bangor, as well as services to Derry.

Justin Huntly McCarthy ( 1859 – 1936 ) ( Member of Parliament for Newry ) published prose translations of 466 quatrains in 1889.

The Newry mortar attack by the Provisional IRA on an RUC station in 1985, which killed nine officers, resulted in the highest number of deaths inflicted on the RUC in one incident.

On March 26, 1885, the 150 to 200 Métis and Aboriginal warriors under the command of Gabriel Dumont defeated a combined group of 90 Prince Albert Volunteers and North-West Mounted Police led by their superintendent Leif Newry Fitzroy Crozier at Duck Lake, outside Batoche.

In 2002, Lisburn and Newry were two of the five towns in the UK that were granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II to mark her Golden Jubilee.

Newry, like Inverness and Stirling in Scotland, has no formal boundaries or city council.

The letters patent were presented to representatives of Newry and Mourne District Council on behalf of the city.

For the 2002 applications, held to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the entrants included all of the above towns except Southwark, together with Greenwich and Wirral in England, Dumfries in Scotland and Carrickfergus, Coleraine, Craigavon and Newry in Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland it was decided to award city status to two entrants: Lisburn ( predominantly unionist ) and Newry ( predominantly nationalist ) so that offence would not be caused to either community.

County Armagh ceased to serve as a local government unit in 1973 and currently the county is divided into four district councils for local government purposes, namely Armagh City and District Council, most of Craigavon Borough Council, approximately the western third of Newry and Mourne District Council and a small part of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, centred around Peatlands Park.

With the proposed reform of Local government in Northern Ireland in 2011, County Armagh is proposed to be form part of two new council areas, Armagh City and Bann District, and Newry City and Down.

Armagh has ceased to serve as an electoral constituency in 1983 but remains the core of the Newry and Armagh ( UK Parliament constituency ) and Newry & Armagh Northern Ireland Assembly electoral constituencies.

Armagh once had a well-developed railroad network with connections to, among others, Armagh City, Culloville, Goraghwood, Markethill, Vernersbridge, Tynan ( see History of rail transport in Ireland ) but today only Newry ( Bessbrook ), Portadown, Poyntzpass, Scarva, and Lurgan are served by rail.

The Mid-Ulster Brigade was also responsible for the Miami Showband ambush, in which three members of the popular Irish cabaret band The Miami Showband were shot dead at a bogus military vehicle checkpoint outside Newry by gunmen dressed in British Army uniforms.

These included the Miami Showband killings of 31 July 1975 – when three members of the popular showband from the Republic of Ireland were killed having been stopped at a fake British Army checkpoint outside of Newry in County Down.

* Downpatrick is situated at the junction of the A7 ( Downpatrick to Saintfield and Belfast ) road, the A25 ( Downpatrick to Newry and Dublin ) road and the A2 coast road.

* Rigsy, broadcaster and popular DJ, was born in Newry but brought up in Newcastle, where his parents still live.

Inverness, Brighton & Hove and Wolverhampton were given their charters to celebrate the millennium, and Preston, Stirling, Newport, Lisburn and Newry to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2002.

Newry Islands is a national park in North Queensland, Australia, 847 km northwest of Brisbane.

The Boeing KC-97 Stratotanker rendezvoused with the B-47 Stratojet bomber at an altitude of 15, 500 feet in the Fighting Fox aerial refueling area over Newry.

Three other large towns and cities are on its border: Newry lies on the western border with County Armagh, while Lisburn and Belfast lie on the northern border with County Antrim.

Textile mills came in to the area with the construction of a plant-and-mill village by the Courtenay Manufacturing Company in Newry on the Little River in 1893.

In October 2009, after a long period of inactivity, the Official IRA began talks with a view to decommissioning its stockpile of weapons, and in February 2010 the Newry based Official Republican Movement announced that the process was complete.

He then formed a partnership with a Mr Fraser, a successful attorney in Newry.

The sailing ship Newry, with 400 passengers bound from Warrenpoint to Québec, was wrecked at Porth Orion in 1880.

This remark more especially applies when the station from which the train starts is like that of the Newry and Armagh line at Armagh, which, as at present arranged, is perfectly unsuited for dealing with long passenger trains.

Activity declined greatly after Gerry Fitt, then the party's sole Stormont MP, left the party to form the Republican Labour Party in 1964, with the party's last known contest being two seats on Newry and Mourne District Council at the 1973 local elections.

Further education in the region was consolidated further when this institution was merged with other FE colleges in Armagh, Newry and Kilkeel to form the Southern Regional College.

It runs from Belfast via Lisburn and Banbridge to the border with the Republic of Ireland south of Newry, from where the road continues to Dublin, becoming the N1 road and M1 motorway.

According to the 2001 Census, 167, 487 people ( 10. 4 % of the population ) had " some knowledge of Irish " with the highest concentrations of Irish speakers found in Belfast, Derry, Newry and south Armagh, central Tyrone ( between Dungannon and Omagh ), and southern County Londonderry ( near Maghera ).

Construction finished in 2007 on a cross-border stretch of grade-separated dual-carriageway linking the northern end of the M1 with the A1 near Newry in County Armagh.

Newry ( together with Bessbrook ) had a population of 27, 433 at the 2001 Census, while Newry and Mourne Council Area had a population of 87, 058.

The city of Newry is one of the constituent cities of the Dublin-Belfast corridor and sits at the entry to the " Gap of the North ", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland.

In 1741, Anthony Obins was involved with the development of the Newry Canal.

It was the construction of the Newry Canal ( linking Carlingford Lough with Lough Neagh ) in 1740, coupled with the growth of the railway in the 19th century, which put Portadown at the hub of transport routes.

The Newry Canal, opened in 1742, linked Carlingford Lough and the Irish Sea with Lough Neagh.

Most descendant Pollocks from Scotland or Ireland ( Pollocks of Newry ), use this " Boar passant quarterly or and vert, pierced through the sinister shoulder with an arrow passant proper ".

Best played in a friendly for Newry Town against Shamrock Rovers in August 1983 before ending his professional career exactly 20 years after joining Manchester United with a brief four-match stint playing for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian National Soccer League during the 1983 season.
