Alexandria is served by the Norfolk & Southern Railway with a connector which allows rail traffic to flow smoothly between lines servicing east – west and north – south destinations.

Rail service is provided by the city-owned Columbia Terminal ( COLT ) Railroad, which runs from the north side of Columbia to Centralia and a connection to the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Originally an agricultural market town, the construction of the Erie Railroad ( now Norfolk Southern ) in the 1840s made Binghamton the commercial and then the manufacturing hub of the Southern Tier of New York and the adjacent counties in Pennsylvania.

Braswell was the location of the only tunnel on Southern Railway's ( now Norfolk Southern Railway ) Chattanooga to Atlanta main line.

Both railroads were planned and built by the team of mining manager and civil engineer William Nelson Page and industrialist and financier Henry Huttleston Rogers, and added a third Hampton Roads coal exporting railhead to the existing Chesapeake and Ohio Railway ( with coal piers at Newport News ) and the Norfolk and Western Railway's similar facilities at Norfolk's Lambert's Point.

Across the harbor, the Norfolk and Western Railway's coal piers were located on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk.

It runs from the Passaic and Harsimus Line at Marion Junction in western Jersey City via a short connection known as the Marion Running Track north to the North Bergen Yard and the CSX Transportation ( CSX ) Rivers Subdivision, At its southern end the running track provides a connection to Norfolk Southern Railway's Croxton Yard and junctions with the National Docks Secondary.

The former Norfolk & Suffolk Joint Railway's Cromer Tunnel at Cromer is disused.

SR 156 continues northeast along two-lane Prince George Drive toward its junction with US 460 ( County Drive ) northwest of Disputanta, which occurs just after the state highway crosses Norfolk Southern Railway's Norfolk District.

The four-lane divided highway has a cloverleaf interchange with I-64 and, just to the north, intersects Norfolk Southern Railway's Richmond District at grade.
