The Official Historian Brigadier Edmonds later alleged that French had removed Smith-Dorrien as he stood in the way of Haig becoming Commander-in-Chief, but this seems unlikely as their antipathy went back a long way and French was later ( December 1915 ) replaced by Douglas Haig as Commander-in-Chief of the BEF against his will.

In 1991, British historian Denis Winter, a staunch critic of Haig, acknowledged Edmonds ' comprehensive understanding of British operations during the war but said " Only a profoundly knowledgeable man could have produced an Official History so misleading and yet with that ring of plausibility which has led to a general acceptance for so long.

" Andrew Green in ' Writing the Great War: Sir James Edmonds and the Official Histories 1915 – 1948 ' ( 2003 ) considered the volumes of the Official History for Gallipoli, the Somme, 3rd Ypres and the German March offensive of 1918 and concluded that Edmonds had been far more objective than others had given him credit for.

Andrew Green devoted a chapter of his study Writng the Great War, Sir James Edmonds and the Official Histories 1915 – 1948 ( 2003 ) to the production of the Passchendaele volume of the Official History.

( 1948 ) the Official Historian J. E. Edmonds wrote that Sir Douglas Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force and General Gough the Fifth Army commander were at cross purposes before and during the early part of the Third Ypres campaign.
