AbiWord had grammar checking before any other open source word processor, although a grammar checker was later added to OpenOffice. org.

The types of software include web pages developed in languages and frameworks like HTML, PHP, Perl, JSP, ASP. NET, XML, and desktop applications like OpenOffice. org, Microsoft Word developed in languages like C, C ++, Objective-C, Java, C #, or Smalltalk.

It is used to compile Sun Java, OpenOffice. org, LibreOffice, and even web server software, like Lighttpd, Hiawatha.

There are many products that can qualify as a file viewer: Microsoft Word viewer or Microsoft PowerPoint viewer, and the OpenOffice equivalents are examples.

Another common example are quickstarts like those shipped with OpenOffice. org, RealPlayer, QuickTime and Adobe products, in which a bloated program that normally takes a long time to load is kept in memory to reduce the delay in starting it.

Desktop applications such as Firefox and OpenOffice. org are not yet available for MINIX 3 however.

The model is similar to the relationship between Netscape Communicator and Mozilla, or StarOffice and OpenOffice. org, although in this case the resulting commercial product is also fully free software.

There are important differences between plain text files created by a text editor, and document files created by word processors such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or OpenOffice. org.

Many other word processing applications exist, including WordPerfect ( which dominated the market from the mid-1980s to early-1990s on computers running Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system ) and open source applications OpenOffice. org Writer, LibreOffice Writer, AbiWord, KWord, and LyX.

Even on Pentium and similar hardware, it remains noticeably faster than MS Word or OpenOffice. org.

Despite these advantages in speed, XyWrite does not have as many features as Word or OpenOffice. org.

In response, more companies are opening the source code to their products, with a notable example being Sun Microsystems and their creation of the OpenOffice. org and OpenSolaris projects, based on their formerly closed-source StarOffice and Solaris software products.

Today this problem is partially solved by products such as OpenOffice. org which provide limited compatibility with Microsoft Office file formats.

* OxygenOffice Professional extends OpenOffice. org, adding the ability to run Visual Basic for Application ( VBA ) macros in Calc ( for testing ), improved Calc HTML export, enhanced Access support for Base, enhanced color-palette, enhanced help and documentation, additional clip art, several templates and sample documents and over 90 fonts.

It is being used as a database and persistence engine in many open source software projects, such as OpenOffice. org Base, LibreOffice Base, and the Standalone Roller Demo, as well as in commercial products, such as Mathematica or InstallAnywhere ( starting with version 8. 0 ).

OpenOffice. org Base (" Base " for short ), a database module roughly comparable to desktop databases such as Microsoft Access and Corel Paradox, initially appeared with OpenOffice. org version 2. 0.

OpenOffice. org Base can hence act as a GUI frontend for SQL views, table-design and query.

Base is integrated into the rest of the OpenOffice. org productivity suite.

Several Open Source programs have become defining entries in their space, including the GIMP image editing system ; Sun's Java programming language and environment ; the MySQL database system ; the FreeBSD Unix operating system ; Sun's OpenOffice. org office productivity suite ; and the Wireshark network packet sniffer and protocol analyser.

The OpenOffice. org team evaluated another database engine, SQLite, but decided to use HSQLDB after evaluating the features, connectivity and embed quality of both database engines.
