The story of Orestes was the subject of the Oresteia of Aeschylus ( Agamemnon, Choephori, Eumenides ), of the Electra of Sophocles, and of the Electra, Iphigeneia in Tauris, Iphigenia at Aulis ( in which he appears as an infant carried by Clytemnestra ), and Orestes, of Euripides.
As Aeschylus tells it, the punishment ended there, but according to Euripides, in order to escape the persecutions of the Erinyes, Orestes was ordered by Apollo to go to Tauris, carry off the statue of Artemis which had fallen from heaven, and to bring it to Athens.
According to Aeschylus, Orestes saw Electra's face before the tomb of Agamemnon, where both had gone to perform rites to the dead ; a recognition took place, and they arranged how Orestes should accomplish his revenge.
Regardless, Pylades is far more than Orestes ' silent companion in Aeschylus ' The Libation Bearers.
Tired of the bloodshed, the gods exonerated Orestes and declared this the end of the curse on the house of Atreus, as described in Aeschylus ' play The Eumenides.

Written between 408, after the Orestes, and 406 BC, the year of Euripides's death, the play was first produced the following year in a trilogy with The Bacchae and Alcmaeon in Corinth by his son or nephew, Euripides the Younger, and won the first place at the Athenian city Dionysia.
