The Oriental Orthodox communion comprises six groups: Syriac Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox, Eritrean Orthodox, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church ( India ) and Armenian Apostolic churches.

Oriental and India Office Collection.

In 1800, he was invited to take up the post of the first director of the India House Library, which became over time the world famous ' India Office Library ' ( now British Library — Oriental Collections ).

His Mackenzie Collection ( 1828 ) is a descriptive catalogue of the extensive collection of Oriental, especially South Indian, manuscripts and antiquities made by Colonel Colin Mackenzie, then deposited partly in the India Office, London ( now part of the Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library ) and partly at Madras ( Chennai ).

Much of his collection of documents, manuscripts, artifacts, and artworks is now in the British Museum and the Oriental and India Office Collections of the British Library, though part of it remains in the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library in Chennai ( Madras ).

The library, along with the Madras museum, benefited greatly from the effects of the Madras Literary Society, the Oriental Manuscripts Library and the Records Office.

On 11 October 2007, the Gallery presented an exhibition drawn from the School's own collections, Objects of Instruction: Treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, and a rotating selection from this collection is on permanent display in the Foyle Special Collections Gallery.
