The original Pete ( sired by " Black Jack ") was an American Pit Bull Terrier named " Pal the Wonder Dog ", and had a natural ring almost completely around his eye ; dye was used to finish it off.

When he was about six months old, Pal the Wonder Dog made a cameo appearance in the Harold Lloyd film The Freshman, in 1925.

There were also other series of Dennis the Menace comic books published in 1961, first there was Dennis the Menace and His Dog, Ruff and Dennis the Menace and His Pal, Joey published the summer and the last but not least was Dennis the Menace and Margaret published in the winter of 1969.

Between 1930 and 1955, " Rin Tin Tin " was heard in three different radio series, beginning April 5, 1930 with The Wonder Dog, in which the original Rin Tin Tin did his own sound effects until his death in 1932, when Rin Tin Tin, Jr. took over.

In September 1930, the title changed from The Wonder Dog to Rin Tin Tin.

In the 1920s, Rin Tin Tin's success for Warner Brothers inspired several imitations from other studios looking to cash in on his popularity, notably RKO's Ace the Wonder Dog, also a German Shepherd.

In addition to the superheroes a trio of sidekicks was introduced, each of whom were new characters not drawn from the comic books: Wendy and Marvin ( voiced by Sherri Alberoni and Frank Welker ) and Wonder Dog ( also voiced by Frank Welker ), none of whom had any special abilities ( save the dog's unexplained ability to reason and " talk ").

Wolf is the show's version of Rex the Wonder Dog.
