In the 1980s and 1990s the major part of Lake Hills Estates north of Green Valley Road, was reorganized into Lake Forest Village, containing the neighborhoods of Waterford, The Summit, Green Valley Hills, Winterhaven, Marina Woods and Windsor Point.

It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the southwest, Crystal Cove State Park on the northwest, Laguna Woods on the northeast, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel on the east, and Dana Point on the southeast.

Historically, Woods Hole included one of the few good harbors ( along with Hyannis ) on the southern side of Cape Cod ( i. e. Great Harbor, contained by Penzance Point ) and became a center for whaling, shipping, and fishing, prior to its dominance today by tourism and marine research.

The school, which had previously been located at Camden Point, Missouri, later became William Woods College for Women, which later became a Coed University, thus accepting men.

The river is the focus of the Pecatonica River Woods State Natural Area near Mineral Point in Iowa County, owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and designated as a natural area in 1992.

The town became a setting off point for the Woods Point Goldfield with the construction of the Yarra Track in the 1870s.

The newly constructed Poverty Point Reservoir, which hosts the acclaimed Black Bear Golf Club, is located just north of the town on Louisiana Highway 17 near Warden, Louisiana.

There is a public golf course, Chesapeake Hills Golf Course near Cove Point Park.

Elements of the Rhode Island Heavy artillery came ashore near the location of the Officer's Club on Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station and also near the Carolina Pines Golf and Country Club.
