Among Akiva's other contemporaries were Elisha ben Avuya, Eliezer ben Tzodok, Eleazar ben Azaria, Gamliel II, Yehuda ben Betheira, Yochanan ben Nuri, Yosi Haglili, Rabbi Yishmael and Chanina ben Dosa.

* Rabbi Yishmael

Once Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh told his brother Rabbi Moshe of Sambor that in one of his " previous lives " he was Rabbi Yishmael Kohen Gadol ( one of a series of high priests of the Second Temple, famous for his mystical visions recorded both in the Talmud and in the corpus known as Sifrei Heichalot-literature of the heavenly palaces ).

Exodus says each day one omer of manna was gathered per family member ( about 3. 64 litres ), and may imply this was regardless of how much effort was put into gathering it ; a midrash attributed to Rabbi Tanhuma remarks that although some were diligent enough to go into the fields to gather manna, others just lay down lazily and caught it with their outstretched hands.

Besides being the day on which the plague affecting Rabbi Akiva's students ceased, Lag Ba ' omer marks the yahrzeit ( anniversary of the death ) of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

Although the anniversary of the death of a tzaddik is usually a mournful day, the anniversary of Rabbi Shimon's death on Lag Ba ' omer is a festive one.

On Lag Ba ' omer 1926, the Chief Rabbi of Haifa, Rabbi Kaniel, officiated at their wedding.

A mass hair cutting ceremony is held on the holiday of Lag Ba ' omer at the tomb of Rabbi Simeon bar Yohai in the Galilean town of Meron.

Meron is most famous for the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and is the site of annual mass public commemoration of Lag Ba ' omer.

Regarding the access that his work provides, Rabbi Steinsaltz says:

The Zohar says that when God saved Abram from the furnace, Terah repented and Rabbi Abba B. Kahana said that God assured Abram that his father Terah had a portion in the World to Come.

A rabbinical tradition attributed to the Yalkout of Rabbi Simeon, says that the idol was hollow and was divided into seven compartments, in one of which they put flour, in the second turtle-doves, in the third a ewe, in the fourth a ram, in the fifth a calf, in the sixth an ox, and in the seventh a child, which were all burned together by heating the statue inside.

In contrast, a third middle opinion held by Hirsch's descendants ( his son-in-law and successor Rabbi Solomon Breuer, his grandson Rabbi Joseph Breuer and the latter's successor Rabbi Shimon Schwab ), Rabbi Joseph Elias in his commentary to the Nineteen Letters ( Feldheim 1995 ) and some Jewish historians, says that both of these understandings of Hirsch's philosophy are misguided ; they refer to these readings of Hirsch as improper historical revisionism.

The former chief rabbi of France, Rabbi René Samuel Sirat, says he personally witnessed Lustiger entering the synagogue to recite kaddish — the Jewish mourners ' prayer — for his mother.

According to the Talmud, Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai criticized the Roman government and was forced to go into hiding with his son for thirteen years.

When Rabbi Isaac Adler died on December 23, 1822, thirteen year old Samuel, his four young siblings, and their mother were left in straitened circumstances.

Conservative Rabbi Robert Gordis wrote an essay on " Ground Rules for a Christian Jewish Dialogue "; in all Jewish denominations, one form or another of these rules eventually became more or less accepted by parties engaging in Jewish-Christian theological dialogue.

Rabbi Yochanan's method in deciding halakha was to establish broad rules that apply in many cases ; for example, he held that the halakha always follows a s ' tam mishna ( an undisputed anonymous mishna ), and he had rules for which tanna (" Mishnah teacher ") to follow in cases of dispute.

Some modern scholars question whether the Great Assembly ever existed as an institution as such ; Rabbi Louis Jacobs, while not endorsing this view, remarks that " references in the Rabbinic literature to the Men of the Great Synagogue can be taken to mean that ideas, rules, and prayers, seen to be pre-Rabbinic but post-biblical, were often fathered upon them ".
