Brown's other work included a criticism of Erasmus Darwin's Zoonomia ( 1798 ), and he was one of the first contributors to the Edinburgh Review, in the second number of which he published a criticism of Immanuel Kant's philosophy, based entirely on Villers's French account of it.

The politically conservative magazine National Review voted Darwin's Black Box one of their top 100 non-fiction books of the century.
The review in the British Unitarian National Review was written by Darwin's old friend William Carpenter, who was clear that only a world of " order, continuity, and progress " befitted an Omnipotent Deity and that " any theological objection " to a species of slug or a breed of dog deriving from a previous one was " simply absurd " dogma.
When Owen's own anonymous review of the Origin appeared in the April Edinburgh Review he praised himself and his own axiom of the continuous operation of the ordained becoming of living things, and showed his anger at what he saw as Darwin's caricature of the creationist position and ignoring Owen's pre-eminence.

After 1853 John Tyndall joined Huxley in running the science section of the Westminster Review and formed a group of evolutionists who helped pave the way for Charles Darwin's 1859 publication of On the Origin of Species and gave evolutionary ideas backing in the ensuing debate.
The term " Darwinism " was first put in print by Huxley in his review of The Origin, in the April 1860 issue of the Westminster Review, which hailed the book as " a veritable Whitworth gun in the armoury of liberalism ", promoting scientific naturalism over theology and praising the usefulness of Darwin's ideas while expressing professional reservations about Darwin's gradualism and doubting if it could be proved that natural selection could form new species.
