After making a series of westerns and comedies, Dwan directed fellow Canadian Mary Pickford in several very successful movies as well as her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, notably in the acclaimed 1922 Robin Hood.

The legendary Robin Hood, initially under the name of Locksley, is also a character in the story, as are his " merry men.

" The character that Scott gave to Robin Hood in Ivanhoe helped shape the modern notion of this figure as a cheery noble outlaw.

Other characters in attendance are Cedric, Aethelstane, Lady Rowena, Isaac of York, his daughter Rebecca, Robin of Locksley and his men, Prince John's advisor Waldemar Fitzurse, and numerous Norman knights.

The most notable Robin Hood films are the lavish Douglas Fairbanks 1922 silent film, the 1938 triple Academy Award winning Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn as Robin ( which contemporary reviewer Frank Nugent links specifically with Ivanhoe ), and the 1991 box-office success Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner ).

Nevertheless, the adventures are still more local than national in scope: while King Richard's participation in the Crusades is mentioned in passing, Robin takes no stand against Prince John, and plays no part in raising the ransom to free Richard.

Later versions of the story have followed suit: the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and 2006 BBC TV series Robin Hood each contain equivalents of Nasir, in the figures of Azeem and Djaq respectively.

Robin goes alone to see Prince John at Gisbourne's castle and announces to John's assembled supporters and a contemptuous Maid Marian that he will do all in his power to oppose John and restore Richard to his rightful place.

He suggests to Prince John that he announce an archery tournament, with the grand prize a golden arrow to be presented by Maid Marian, knowing that Robin will be unable to resist the challenge.

Following The Invisible Man, Universal Studios tried to typecast him in horror films, but he broke free, starting with the gleefully evil role of Prince John in The Adventures of Robin Hood ( 1938 ), then with his Academy Award-nominated performance as the conflicted corrupt US senator in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ( 1939 ), and followed with probably his most famous role, the flexible French police Captain Renault in Casablanca ( 1942 ).

After his appearance as Miles Hendon in The Prince and the Pauper ( 1937 ), he was cast in his most celebrated role as Robin Hood in The Adventures of Robin Hood ( 1938 ), his first film in Technicolor.

In " Robin Hood and the Monk ", for example, he is shown as quick tempered and violent, assaulting Little John for defeating him in an archery contest ; in the same ballad Much the Miller's Son casually kills a " little page " in the course of rescuing Robin Hood from prison.
