* SPQR VIII: The River God's Vengeance: elected aedile, where he investigates and prosecutes corrupt building practices, and supervises cleaning of the city sewers after a serious flood.

* SPQR I: The King's Gambit: Decius uncovers a plot to subvert Lucullus's command in the East, on the eve of his campaign against Mithridates VI of Pontus.

Although authors such as Anne Perry wrote in the genre during the next decade, it wasn't until about 1990 that the genre's popularity saw a fairly quick ascent with works such as Lindsey Davis's Falco novels, set in the Roman Empire of Vespasian ; Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody novels, in which the main character is not only a Victorian lady but an early feminist and an archaeologist working in early 20th century Egypt ; Steven Saylor's " Roma Sub Rosa " novels, set in the Roman Republic at the time of Julius Caesar ; John Maddox Roberts's SPQR series set during the Roman Republic ; and P. C. Doherty's various series, including The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan, the Hugh Corbett medieval mysteries, partly indebted to the hardboiled tradition, and the Canterbury Tales of Mystery and Murder.

* A brief reference to Charun in The Tribune's Curse: SPQR VII a 2003 novel by John Maddox Roberts in an invocation to " Father Dis " and related figures, including " Charun of the hammer " ( p. 65 ).

SPQR is an initialism from a Latin phrase, Senātus Populusque Rōmānus (" The Senate and People of Rome ", see translation ), referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic, and used as an official emblem of the modern day comune ( municipality ) of Rome.

Use of SPQR has been revived in modern times, throughout Europe and beyond.

In Rome today sewage and water supply accesses contain the label " SPQR " in recognition of the innovation in sewage and water supply realized during the Roman times.

The letters " SPQR " can sometimes be seen displayed on London market trader's stalls.

Titus Annius Milo appears as a recurring character in John Maddox Roberts ' SPQR series of novels.

This inscription was modeled on the Roman “ SPQR ” ( Latin populusque Senatus Romanus-the Senate and People of Rome ) and stands for Senatus populusque Lubecensis.

* Clodia plays a significant role in several books of the SPQR series by John Maddox Roberts.

* Clodius is a particular enemy of Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger in the SPQR series of mysteries by John Maddox Roberts.

It was in the 19th century, it was thought that he landed by Deal Castle-hence a house there with SPQR emblazoned on its gate-but the landing-point is now put half a mile further south, beyond the lifeboat station, and marked by a concrete memorial.
