In his history of the Donatist heresy, Saint Optatus recounts that at Carthage a Catholic matron, named Lucilla, incurred the censures of the Church for having kissed the relics of a reputed martyr whose claims to martyrdom had not been juridically proved.

Already during his governorship Paulinus had developed a fondness for the 3rd century martyr Saint Felix of Nola.

In the 13th century, the feast of Saint Melchiades ( as he was then called ) was included, with the mistaken qualification of " martyr ", in the Roman Calendar for celebration on 10 December.

Thereafter, the feast of Saint Felix I, no longer mentioned in the General Roman Calendar, is celebrated on his true day of death, 30 December, and without the qualification of " martyr ".

Saint George ( c. 275 / 281 – 23 April 303 ) was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier from Syria Palaestina and a soldier in the Guard of Diocletian, who is venerated as a Christian martyr.
