After the failure of the co-emperor Michael IX to stem the Turkish advance in Asia Minor in 1302 and the disastrous Battle of Bapheus, the Byzantine government hired the Catalan Company of Almogavars ( adventurers from Aragon and Catalonia ) led by Roger de Flor to clear Byzantine Asia Minor of the enemy.

Fifteen months later Prince Edward had escaped captivity ( having been freed by his cousin Roger Mortimer ) and led the royalists into battle, turning the tables on de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham in 1265.

" On 30 October 1137, at the Battle of Rignano ( next to Monte Gargano ), the younger Roger and his father, with Sergius of Naples, met the defensive army of Duke Ranulf.

The town of Cheyenne in Roger Mills County is the location of the Battle of Washita River ( also called Battle of the Washita ; Washita Battlefield ), where George Armstrong Custer ’ s 7th U. S. Cavalry attacked Black Kettle ’ s Cheyenne village on the Washita River on November 26, 1868.

On November 6, 1896 it was renamed Custer County after General George Armstrong Custer, who had massacred the Southern Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Washita 20 miles west in Roger Mills County, and was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Both Roger and Robert may have fought at the Battle of Hastings, and afterwards they were rewarded with a substantial estate in East Anglia.

Roger Bruce Chaffee was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Central High School.
