Argon ( αργος, Greek meaning " inactive ", in reference to its chemical inactivity ) was suspected to be present in air by Henry Cavendish in 1785 but was not isolated until 1894 by Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay in Scotland in an experiment in which they removed all of the oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen from a sample of clean air.

The Prince's governor and treasurer was Sir Henry Vernon, and Arthur may frequently have lived at Sir Henry's residence, Haddon Hall, in Derbyshire: in the house was an apartment, called " The Prince's Chamber ", adorned with Arthur's coat of arms.

In 1909, Major ( later Colonel Sir ) Vernon Kell became director of the newly formed Secret Intelligence Bureau ( SIB ), created as a response to growing public opinion that all Germans living in England were spies.

At the outbreak of war he was able to work with Vernon Kell and Sir Basil Thomson of the Special Branch to arrest twenty-two German spies in England.

Haldane was an ally of Herbert Henry Asquith and Sir Edward Grey-on the Liberal Imperialist wing of the party, followers of Lord Rosebery rather than of Sir William Harcourt.

The prime mover ( who is regarded as the founder ) was Reverend William Vernon Harcourt, following a suggestion by Sir David Brewster, who was disillusioned with the elitist and conservative attitude of the Royal Society.
