Saint Herman of Alaska ( born 1756 or 1760 in Serpukhov, Russia – died December 13 or November 15, 1837 on Spruce Island, Alaska ) was one of the first Eastern Orthodox missionaries to the New World, and is considered by Orthodox Christians to be the patron saint of the Americas.

Saints Sergius of Valaam | Sergius and Herman of Valaam | Herman of Valaam Chapel, built in 1898 over the site where St. Herman was buried on Spruce Island in December 1836.

William Jan Berry ( born in Los Angeles, California April 3, 1941 ; died March 26, 2004 ), was the son of aeronautical engineer William L. Berry ( born December 7, 1909 in The Bronx, NY ; died December 19, 2004 in Camarillo, California ), who had been project manager of the " Spruce Goose " and flew on its only flight with Howard Hughes, and Clara Lorentze Mustad Berry ( born September 2, 1919 in Bergen, Norway ; died July 9, 2009 ).

Ouzinkie, Uusenkaaq in Alutiiq, is a city on Spruce Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, United States.

Private schools include Barnstable Academy, located in a business and industrial park off Long Hill Road ; The New Jersey Japanese School, located next to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church ; and The Gerrard Berman Day School ( Solomon Schechter of North Jersey ) located on Spruce Street.
