In the playoffs they built on their cold weather reputation, defeating both the St. Louis Cardinals 30 – 14 and the Los Angeles Rams 14 – 10 in frozen Metropolitan Stadium.

Minnesota beat Dallas in the Wild Card game 27 – 10, and faced playoff newcomer Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams in the Divisional matchup.

In doing so, the Vikings became the second team in NFL history to have a. 500 record ( 8 – 8 ) in the regular season and win a playoff game ( The St. Louis Rams did the same thing only a day earlier ).

The Saints defeated the St. Louis Rams 31-28 in 2000 to notch their first-ever playoff win.

In his first year, he took the team to the 2001 playoffs but lost to the Minnesota Vikings a week after beating the St. Louis Rams for the team's first ever playoff win.

( The Baltimore Colts were favored by 17 over the New York Jets in Super Bowl III, and the St. Louis Rams were favored by 14 over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI.

As it happened, the Olympic torch was passing through St. Louis on its way to Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and Smith served as a torchbearer in a ceremony with St. Louis Rams ' quarterback Kurt Warner that evening.

After losing the conference championship in 2001 to the St. Louis Rams, in 2002 to the eventual Super Bowl Champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in 2003 to the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles advanced to Super Bowl XXXIX at the end of the 2004 season, where they lost to the New England Patriots, 24 – 21.
