Marine Protected Areas ( MPAs ), Biosphere reserves, marine parks, national monuments world heritage status, fishery management and habitat protection can protect reefs from anthropogenic damage.

Under the Wild Birds Directive, 26 sites totalling roughly 25 % of the nation's land are " Special Protected Areas "; the Natura 2000 proposal would increase the totals to 260 sites and 32 % of national territory.

The Northern Territory contains 95 separate Protected Areas with a total area of 53, 505 km² ( land area: 51, 269 km² – 3. 81 % of the territory ’ s area ).

It contains 470 separate Protected Areas with a total land area of 69, 388 km² ( 4. 02 % of the state ’ s area ).

South Australia contains 324 separate Protected Areas with a total land area of 216, 310 km² ( 21. 97 % of the state ’ s area ).

It contains 2850 separate Protected Areas with a total land area of 39, 273 km² ( 17. 26 % of the state ’ s area ).

It contains no fewer than 1224 separate Protected Areas with a total area of 170, 610 km² ( land area: 159, 151 km² – 6. 30 % of the state ’ s area ).

The term " protected area " also includes Marine Protected Areas, the boundaries of which will include some area of ocean.

By contrast, only 1. 17 % of the world's oceans is included in the world's ~ 6, 800 Marine Protected Areas.

Protected areas will usually encompass several other zones that have been deemed important for particular conservation uses, such as Important Bird Areas ( IBA ) and Endemic Bird Areas ( EBA ), Centres of Plant Diversity ( CBD ), Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas ( ICCA ), Alliance for Zero Extinction Sites ( AZE ) and Key Biodiversity Areas ( KBA ) among others.
