# Tenebrae ( original title: Tenebre ) – released with 5 seconds cut in 1999 ; released uncut in 2003

When the principal services of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil were celebrated in the morning, the office of Matins and Lauds of each day was celebrated on the evening of the preceding day in the service known as Tenebrae ( Latin, " Darkness ").

The celebration of Matins and Lauds of these days in the form referred to as Tenebrae in churches with a sufficient number of clergy was universal in the Roman Rite until the reform of the Holy Week ceremonies by Pope Pius XII in 1955.

Even at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where the need to observe a timetable that did not disturb the established rights of other churches forced the timetable of Roman Catholic Holy Week services to remain unchanged, the Office of Tenebrae was abandoned in 1977.

The 1970 revision of the Roman Breviary, now called the Liturgy of the Hours, recommends public celebration of the Office of Readings ( Matins ) and Morning Prayer ( Lauds )-what was formerly called " Tenebrae "-for Good Friday and Holy Saturday, Unlike its older form in the Divine Office, the newer form of the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer on these days has no distinctive structure, and there is no extinguishing of candles or lights.

What was left of the band continued to work on further soundtracks, but there was a partial reunification for Argento's Tenebrae ( 1982 ) ( although they were credited separately, not as Goblin ).

Allegri composed his setting of the Miserere for the final act within the first lesson of the Tenebrae service.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Tenebrae is the name given to the celebration, with special ceremonies, of Matins and Lauds, the first two hours of the Divine Office, of the last three days of Holy Week.

After working for 15 years as a personal assistant, assistant director and screenwriter with his famous father ( he first assisted him on Planet of the Vampires in 1965 ), Lamberto Bava worked as an assistant director with Dario Argento ( on Inferno and Tenebrae ) and with Ruggero Deodato ( on the notorious Jungle Holocaust and Cannibal Holocaust ).

In Christianity it is traditionally read during Tenebrae of the Holy Triduum.

In the traditional Holy Week services of the Roman Catholic Church and some Anglican churches, a candelabrum with 15 candles on it is used for the service of Tenebrae.

De lamentatione, another early work, is a contribution to the Elizabethan practice of setting groups of verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah following the format of the Tenebrae lessons sung in the Catholic rite during the last three days of Holy Week, other contributors including Tallis, White, Parsley and the elder Ferrabosco.

Some, such as Cicero who calls them by a Latin name, Tenebrae, or the Darknesses, name them daughters of Erebus and Nyx.

The main traditional types of church music sung during Holy Week are " Passions ", musical settings of the Gospel narratives, both a Catholic and Lutheran tradition, and settings of the readings and responses from the Catholic Tenebrae services, especially those of the Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet.

Miserere, full name " Miserere mei, Deus " ( Latin: " Have mercy on me, O God ") by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri, is a setting of Psalm 51 ( 50 ) composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for use in the Sistine Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Wednesday and Friday of Holy Week.

Historically informed recordings have been released by The Sixteen and The Tallis Scholars, and more recently by Tenebrae.

George Malcolm consolidated the musical reputation of Westminster Cathedral Choir during his time as Master of Music — in particular through the now legendary recording of Victoria ’ s Tenebrae Responsories.

For the " Worlock " video Skinny Puppy included footage deleted from the US versions of such Argento films as Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae, Phenomena, and Opera.

Hill's poetry encompasses a variety of styles, from the dense and allusive writing of King Log ( 1968 ) and Canaan ( 1997 ) to the simplified syntax of the sequence ' The Pentecost Castle ' in Tenebrae ( 1978 ) to the more accessible poems of Mercian Hymns ( 1971 ), a series of thirty poems ( sometimes called ' prose-poems ' a label which Hill rejects in favour of ' versets ') which juxtapose the history of Offa, eighth century ruler of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, with Hill's own childhood in the modern Mercia of the West Midlands.

Most of the settings, which are often used at Tenebrae, are in a simple falsobordone style.
