" The second part presents Jesus in dialogue with his immediate followers and gives an account of his Passion and Crucifixion and of his appearances to the disciples after his Resurrection.

Baldung's most sustained effort is the altarpiece of Freiburg, where the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Twelve Apostles, the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity and Flight into Egypt, and the Crucifixion, with portraits of donors, are executed with some of that fanciful power that Martin Schongauer bequeathed to the Swabian school.

While Crucifixion itself was not a bloody form of death, blood in connection with it is taken as the sin offering.

Crucifixion methods varied considerably with location and time period.

Crucifixion was introduced into Japan during the Sengoku period ( 1467 – 1573 ), after a 350-year period with no capital punishment.

As Bryan spoke his final sentence, recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus, he placed his hands to his temples, fingers extended ; with the final words, he extended his arms to his sides straight out to his body and held that pose for about five seconds as if offering himself as sacrifice for the cause, as the audience watched in dead silence.

Writing in 1933, art historian Bryson Burroughs, who at that time attributed to Hubert the Crucifixion and Last Judgement diptych and whom he describes as " the fountainhead of northern painting ", suggests he did the underdrawing for the Ghent Altarpiece with Jan painting in after his brother's death.

A third method, using a completely different astronomical approach based on a lunar Crucifixion darkness and eclipse model ( consistent with Apostle Peter's reference to a " moon of blood " in Acts 2: 20 ), points to Friday, 3 April AD 33.

The next day, in the forenoon on Friday, all gather again to pray the Royal Hours, a special expanded celebration of the Little Hours ( including the First Hour, Third Hour, Sixth Hour, Ninth Hour and Typica ) with the addition of scripture readings ( Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel ) and hymns about the Crucifixion at each of the Hours ( some of the material from the previous night is repeated ).

Some Baptist, Pentecostal, many Sabbatarian and non-denominational churches oppose the observance of Good Friday, regarding it as a papist tradition, and instead observe the Crucifixion on Wednesday to coincide with the Jewish sacrifice of the Passover Lamb ( which Christians believe is an Old Testament pointer to Jesus Christ ).

It is alleged that she was formerly Herodias, and she admits that she laughed at Jesus on his route to the Crucifixion, and is now condemned to wander until she meets with him again ( cf.

" The Crucifixion " features a world-weary Pilate disgusted with the political machinations that led to Jesus ' condemnation.

To the right of the " Platonica " is the chapel of Honorius III, adapted as the vestibule of the mausoleum, with interesting 13th century paintings of Peter and Paul, the Crucifixion, saints, the Massacre of the Innocents, Madonna and Child, and other subjects.

There is later work of the master in the St Christopher and Saints of 1484 in the academy, or the Newenhoven Madonna in the hospital of Bruges, or a large Crucifixion, with scenes from the Passion, of 1491 from the Lübeck Cathedral ( Dom ) of Lübeck, now in Lübeck's St. Annen Museum.

At one point, when we reach the first Gospel which speaks of the Crucifixion, there is a custom for the priest to bring out a large cross with an icon the crucified Christ attached to it, and places it in the center of the nave for all the faithful to venerate.

At the time, a shrine like this might shelter an image of the Crucifixion or the Virgin Mary, but since it is turned away from the viewer, we are not sure what it truly is.

Here in painted an eleven-panel altarpiece for the Freiburg Cathedral, still intact today, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, including, The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Flight into Egypt, The Crucifixion, Four Saints and The Donators.

It is believed that after the Crucifixion, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary put a basket full of eggs at the foot of the cross.

In the following years he painted works for other churches there, including the " Mond Crucifixion " ( about 1503 ) and the Brera Wedding of the Virgin ( 1504 ), and for Perugia, such as the Oddi Altarpiece.

They show scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, the Crucifixion, monks, monsters and humorous animals.

The devotion fits on the Catholic tradition to venerate the Virgin Mary particularly on Saturdays, which originated in the scriptural account that, as the Mother of Jesus Christ, her heart was to be pierced with a sword, as prophesied during the presentation of Jesus in the temple ; such sword was the bitter sorrow during the Crucifixion of Jesus ( which Catholic devotees understand as the union of the Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart of Jesus -- see Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Apparitions ).

Some of the best preserved works are in the Sala Profundis or meditation room where there are depictions of the Four Evangelists, Saints Peter and Paul, the Virgin Mary and the Crucifixion.

In the same church, in the chapel of Saint Jerome, is a fresco by Gozzoli of the Virgin and Saints, the Crucifixion and other subjects.

Saints were shown more frequently, and altarpieces showed saints relevant to the particular church or donor in attendance on a Crucifixion or enthroned Virgin and Child, or occupying the central space themselves ( this usually for works designed for side-chapels ).

A Crucifixion with St. Julian ( who is specially venerated in L ' Aquila ), an early 16th-century frescoed niche of a Virgin with Child and Saints, and fourteen oversized 17th-century paintings by Karl Ruther, a monk of Gdańsk, representing episodes from the life of St. Celestine.

To this period of Andrea belong a small Crucifixion ( 1503, at the Louvre ) and the portrait of Charles d ' Amboise ( Louvre ); the portrait of Giovanni Longoni ( 1505, National Gallery of London ); the Annunciation ( 1506, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge ); and the beautiful Virgin of the Green Cushion ( Louvre ), for which a sensitive drawing of the Virgin's head is in the Ambrosiana at Milan ; and the Head of the Baptist in a silver charger ( 1507, Louvre ).

The interior features three murals by the German painter Wilhelm Lamprecht – the first depicting the Crucifixion ; the second, the Virgin Mary and Ss.

For Christians of the East the diskos symbolises the Virgin Mary, who received Christ into her womb, and gave him birth ; and also the Tomb of Christ which received his body after the Crucifixion, and from which he resurrected.

In the Church of St James at Bruges, there are three fine paintings by Deyster representing the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and the death of the Virgin.

The central panel has a Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist standing beside the cross, with the sun and the moon above the cross.

For another, Finiguerra's pax for the baptistery, if Cellmni is to be trusted, represented not a Coronation of the Virgin but a Crucifixion.
