In a manner very similar to, the Gospel of Philip presents Mary Magdalene among Jesus ' female entourage, adding that she was his koinônos, a Greek word variously translated in contemporary versions as partner, associate, comrade, companion.

Others ' irritation from the love and affection presented by Jesus to Mary Magdalene is claimed in the apocryphal Gospel of Philip.

In the Gospel of John, Nathanael is introduced as a friend of Philip.

** The Gospel of Philip

Herod was the first husband of Herodias, and because the Gospel of Mark states that Herodias was married to Philip, some scholars have argued that his name was actually Herod Philip.

Many scholars dispute this, however, and believe the Gospel writer was in error, a suggestion supported by the fact that the later Gospel of Luke drops the name Philip.

The Ecclesia Gnostica recognizes five initiatory sacraments as listed in the Gospel of Philip: Baptism, Chrism or Confirmation, Eucharist, Redemption ( sacrament ) and Bride-Chamber, with the additional two sustaining sacraments of Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick.

He has been a friend and collaborator to such eminent intellectuals as Pier Paolo Pasolini ( in whose The Gospel According to St. Matthew he played the part of Philip ), Italo Calvino ( with whom he collaborated, for a short while, as counsellor of the publishing house Einaudi and developed plans for a journal ), Ingeborg Bachmann, Pierre Klossowski, Guy Debord, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Derrida, Antonio Negri, Jean-François Lyotard and others.

Scholars Philip Jenkins and Robert M. Price noticed parallels between The Secret Gospel of Mark and a novel by James Hunter published in 1940 entitled The Mystery of Mar Saba.

The Gospel of Philip is one of the Gnostic Gospels, a text of New Testament apocrypha, dating back to around the third century but lost to modern researchers until an Egyptian peasant rediscovered it by accident, buried in a cave near Nag Hammadi, in 1945.
