In 1903 Frank Bowden, head of the Raleigh cycle company, formed The Three-Speed Gear Syndicate, having obtained the rights to both the Reilly / Archer and Sturmey 3-speeds.

Reilly's hub went into production as the first Sturmey Archer 3-speed.

A similar version of the ever-popular AW hub is manufactured by Sturmey Archer.

The Raleigh company were soon offering the Bowden Brake as an accessory, and were quick to incorporate the cable into handlebar mounted Sturmey Archer ( in which they had a major interest ) gear changes.

The company was founded in 1902 by Henry Sturmey ( 1857 – 1930 ) and James Archer under the guidance of Frank Bowden, the primary owner of the Raleigh Bicycle Company.
