John Young, a captain in the United States Navy, had flown on three spaceflights prior to Apollo 16: Gemini 3, Gemini 10 and Apollo 10, which orbited the Moon.

It was there that Young retrieved, at the request of mission control, the largest rock returned by an Apollo mission, a breccia nicknamed Big Muley after mission geology principal investigator Bill Muehlberger.

During the third and final lunar excursion of the mission, astronauts Young and Duke were to explore North Ray Crater, the largest of any of the craters any Apollo expedition had visited.

Young drove the rover to a point about east of the Lunar Module, known as the ' VIP site ', so its television camera, controlled remotely by mission control, could observe Apollo 16's liftoff from the Moon.

Cernan is one of only three humans to voyage to the Moon on two different occasions ( the others being Jim Lovell and John Young ), one of only twelve people to walk on the Moon and the only person to have descended toward the Moon in the lunar lander twice ( the first was Apollo 10's non-landing mission ).

John Watts Young ( born September 24, 1930 ) is a retired American astronaut, Naval officer, test pilot and aeronautical engineer, who became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as commander of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.

Young enjoyed the longest career of any astronaut, making six spaceflights over the course of 42 years of active NASA service, becoming the first person to make six spaceflights ; and is the only person to have piloted four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, the Apollo Command / Service Module, the Apollo Lunar Module, and the Space Shuttle.

In 1965 Young flew on the first manned Gemini mission, and in 1969 was the first person to orbit the moon alone during Apollo 10.

The assignment of Ed White, the Gemini 7 backup commander, to Apollo created an opening for Young as commander of Gemini 10 in 1966.

Young was backup commander of Apollo 13, the troubled mission in which the moon landing was aborted because of an explosion in the Service Module.

By rotation, Young became commander of Apollo 16, and was an enthusiastic student of geology while preparing for the mission.

Had the injury been more severe, Cernan would have been medically dropped from the flight and Young would have commanded the last two Apollo Moon landings.
